Decorating ideas for room with red couch, white walls, and gray carpet?
I am moving into my first apartment and buying my own furniture for the first time. I want to have a cozy, bright decor in my living room but I don't know what to do. The walls are white and cannot be changed. The carpet is gray. So I was thinking about a three seat pure red or burgundy couch paired with some patterned throw pillows. From there, I do not know what to do. I have this tendency to try to match everything so if it was up to me, I would get red everything and they would probably all mismatch. . . Any ideas on color schemes for everything else? There will be curtains, a recliner, coffee table, area rug (can you put a rug on carpet because the gray seems so bland?), painting frames, and TV stand. Any help is appreciated!

In my last house (I owned it so I could do anything I wanted). I put in medium gray carpet, painted my walls a light gray (I know u cant) I decorated in burgundy....I had a black micro-fiber sectional, throw pillows were in burgundy with touches of teal, green and a touch of black. My drapes were burgundy. You can put rugs over carpet, I found a big rug 8'x12' ( room was big) the rug had the colors of the throw pillows in it. The room was sharp and not that expensive, except the sectional.
I mixed up my picture frames, bought cheap 1's at Dollar stores and spray painted some in burgundy, black and hunter green. Mixing them up can make a neat display on the walls, especially if they are in different sizes.
Hope this helps & have lots of fun!

Congrats on your first apt! Soo exciting!! I had the same problem when i got my first new place too. I also chose red sofas and they make your room pop! And believe it or not but you can really do a lot with accessories like throw pillows to change up your space. You absolutely can and should lay an area rug on boring apartment complex carpet.Just think of the existing carpet as being invisible and really try not to match your whole set up to the gray carpet unless you want to do a modern black/red/gray/white theme which can be really sleek. What i did is i picked a throw pillow, or patterned carpet or curtains that had a cool design with colors that looked cool together but I would never be brave enough to pair together. I then bought accessories within the colors on that item. you can be really funky and match your stuff without being matchy and dated. And if you get tired of those colors in a few months buy new pillows and accessories. I recommend trying discount stores like Ross, TJ Max first to see what cool/cheap finds you can get before going to department store. I have had great luck finding the major stuff for super cheap and then i could go "splurge" on smaller items. Good luck and have fun!

Black accents would look great with the red couch, white walls and gray couch. So would a touch of bright yellow. Yes you can put an area rug over a carpet. Picking out your rug would be a good first step. Then you could pull colors from the rug., esp if it patterned.

If you want to keep everything that is already white white, then make sure that everything else has color. Pick a color scheme that you like and run with it! You pretty much have all the freedom in the world! Throw rugs, accent pillows, candles, artwork... your possibilities are endless. I would say watch a few episodes of your favorite design show and see how they use color and try to mimic that. Good luck!
