Wy did my sons guinea pig die?-only serious answers please?
My son had an 8 month old male guinea pig who has always seemed perfectly healthy. He was fed a varied diet of guinea pig food as well as a mixture of fruit and veges (mainly apples, carrots and lettuce) When we arrived home this afternoon my husband found him in his cage quite contorted and not moving so took him to the vet, but he died on arrival. The vet said that she was not an expert on 'pocket pets' but that his spine seemed thin and this was a sign of a lack of vitamin C and so she thought his diet may have been the problem. I do not believe this as he was given food recommended for guinea pigs and we have another one who has the same diet who is perfectly fine. Any ideas, as we are concerned the other guinea pig may be at risk and my son is devastated.
Thanks

hmm i doubt this was the case then, and the vet even said herself she was not an expert in pocket pets so chances are shes wrong.
if your that concerned about your other guinea pigs i would get them checked over and just keep and eye on them for any problems or unusual behaviour. if the guinea pig who recently died was sharing with the others than he might not of been getting to the food because the others were getting their to soon maybe?, and if it is true that he died of lack of vitamin C it cannot be passed onto the other guinea pigs.
another reason why i think the vet was wrong is, if you were feeding it plently of fruit and veg, it would of been getting plently of vitamin C.
best of luck, im sorry for your loss and i hope your son feels better soon, i know what its like losing a pet it may not seem like much to some people but its really sad and quite depressing, i feel so bad for him. =(

I am also an animal lover and have always been and I got a rabbit when I was 4 and she is still alive today and I am now 14 and she was perfect and we did resently get a dog but it is a breed that gets along with the rabbit, but since you have 2 big dogs I dont think a rabbit would work, but guinea pig might work but it couldn't be around the dogs cause they would kill it. I think the best thing would be to say right now isn't the best time for a little furry animal but maybe another fish, also a guinea pig or hamster don't live very long and would probably not be the best idea he would get really upset but maybe since he is 11 he would be ok!

As your vet isn't a 'pocket pets' specialist, i wouldn't have thought his suggestion of a vitamin C deficiency isn't correct considering the diet which you are describing.
Are you sure your guinea was eating its mix? It is often the case that Guineas only eat the 'best bit' of their mix and maybe not the high in vitamin C bits.
I would't worry about the cause of his death too much considering the fact that your other Guinea is fine. It could've been anything really, just like it can be with humans. Sorry to hear about his death though.
I currently have 2 Guinea Pigs who are 8 years old and have never been to the vet. Regarding your current Guinea Pigs diet, i have found that the best combination of food is important. Every day, i give my guineas quite a small amount of leafy greens (from rocket to lettuce) along with half a slice of bread with some hay. Sometimes i would put some apple or carrot in too. I have kept Guineas for many years, and under the diet i have given mine now, they have thrived the best and been very happy. Maybe you could try this with your guinea, however, don't give too much portions. Very small amounts each day is perfect. Guineas naturally eat vegetables rather than dried mix so providing small amounts of veggies each day keeps Guineas happy and natural, but not making them fat or unhealthy when given in good amounts.
After your a while, you could think about finding a new friend for your current Guinea. They are herd animals and don't live very happily on their own.
Very sorry to hear about your Guinea and that the vet wasn't much help.

I'v never even owned a guinea pig but I do know sometimes people and animals just aren't born healthy could of been born with a spine condition or something.

VITAMIN C DROPS!! Your guinea pig most likely died of scurvy. Guinea pigs, unlike humans, can not make their own vit c. A lack of vitamin c will cause a disease of scurvy (read more about it from the link below.) I would buy vitamin drops for the other piggy and put them in his drops ASAP. Use the drops every day. DO NOT put the drops in the water, you can not tell how much water a piggy drinks thus will not know how much vit c he is getting from the drops. Vit c also decays quickly so be sure to get new vit drops every couple of months. Good luck with your piggy! And i would definitely recommend switching to a vet who IS an expert on "pocket pets"

Guinea pigs being prey animals will hide the fact that they are ill and by the the time you can see it they are in the acute stages and are often beyond vet help. The diet you diet you fed it was not the best but should not have led to death, i would more tend dot believe it had an upper repertory infection and these can take a guinea pig very quickly. Please do not blame your self's these things happen especially of you were first time guinea pig owners.
Please know that this is going to hurt it is natural but it will get better in time this i can promise.I lost my Sally who should not have passed, they could not figure out why she passed and i way not ready to loose her but as time went by day by day it go easier and easier. Morning is a process and just allow it to happen. Just do not run out and get another one real fast as i did as i expected the other one to take the place of Sally and it just could not do so.
Good luck and God bless

I doubt this was the cause of death, but for your other guinea pigs health: do NOT feed too many fruits! They are very sugary and acidic so they shouldn't be fed any more than once a week.
Only one carrot per guinea pig because they, too are very sugary.
What kind of lettuce do you give them? Iceberg or Romaine? Iceberg isn't bad for them, but it isn't good for them either. There's no nutrients in it.
What kind of "guinea pig food" were you feeding him? Anything with colors, nuts, or seeds is dangerous for them because dyes are used to make it colorful and they can choke on the nuts and seeds.

carrots, apples and lettuce, that is not a good diet for pigs.
they need lots of vit.c!!!
fruits should be given only as treats cause they r sugary and acidic and carrots only once a day.iceberg lettuce is not a good option ,and if u were giving him that, then he would get very little nutrition.
he needed lots of leafy veggies and guinea pigs like us love variety.
if u r getting more guinea pigs, then plz provide them with a proper diet.
im really sorry he died.

if you do rethink of getting another small animal id find another veterinarian because she wasn't experienced with "pocket pets" as she called it. it could have been several thing's. guiena pig's shouldn't be fed food's that contain anything other than pellets and or alfalfa , the nut's and other sugary fruit's may have something to do with his death , guiena pig's have sensitive digestive system's and if you we're not feeding him alfalfa he may have or may have not lived , I'm not sure why they sell foods like that in pet store's, if you do get another small animal get a hay bin and fill it with alfalfa everyday, and never buy anything like mixed food , he could have also died due to constipation ( from all the sweets). if you do get another small animal give it a carrot once a week or once a month and nothing like nut's or raisins EVEN with alfalfa it blocks their digestive system from working properly
ice burg lettuce aren't bad! they have a lack of vitamin's.
sorry to hear about you're loss!
good luck !

Sounds like it could have been a seizure inconjunction with a bad spine (could be a genetic problem) or if the guinea pig was in a hot spot it could have been heatstroke. It could be a range of problems and unless you are willing to spend lots of money to find out be happy you still have the other one and watch it's behaviour. The slightest change could tell you what is wrong.
