Trade Offer Fuentes for Nathan?
Was just offered Nathan for Fuentes. My 1st reaction was hell yea! but after looking at 2008 #'s along with this seasons's I am not so sure. Nathatn had 9 more saves in 08 but Fuentes had more K's. The rest of the #'s were very similar. I tend to have more faith in Nathan but Fuentes is on a better team. SHould I accept the offfer? Have you heard any news on Nathan's health?
The offer took me by surprise.

Nathan as a closer is money, pure and simple, go to the bank and cash the check. Fuentes has done very well even at Colorado given the thin air but has yet to be considered as super reliable as Nathan as a closer. You'd assume he'd get more save opportunities than Nathan but he may blow a few more. Historically however, there's not real evidence to support any of that, both have similiar blown save numbers but I'd have to say when Nathan blow's a save, I'm stunned. I've yet to get to that confidence level with Fuentes but perhaps that's simply because the data set on Fuentes isn't as large. Nathan's numbers are far smaller in ERA and WHIP, perhaps this is the only real difference between the two, with Nathan you'll get perhaps less saves, not the perhaps there, with Fuentes you'll get perhaps more saves but not do as well with ERA and WHIP.
My advice, hang on to Nathan, cash your low ERA and WHIP, high 30 to low 40 saves and smile at other owners who are pulling their hair out at closers who blow saves or get them but give up a run an innings any owner of Brad Lidge can tell you about that kind of pain. He'll pitch 70 innings a year, a third of what a good starter will get you and you'll never need to worry. I won't say Fuentes can't approach that, you've just got that little bit more confidence in Nathan than Fuentes. Judge it on current stats this year, Nathan has 6 saves, Fuentes 10, Nathan's ERA and WHIP are 3.07 (high for him, should come down) and 1.09 (slightly high for him) and Fuentes numbers are 4.61 and 1.54 which are way up from his time in Colorado (go figure, perhaps the pressure of pitching for a club expected to take the pennant.)

I would accept it with out a doubt. Nathan is one of the top 3 or 4 closers in the game. The Twins in my opinion are the best team in the central and will give Nathan a lot of save chances. I also have heard that Fuentes may not be the Angels closer all year. The bottom line is Nathan is much better than Fuentes. Accept the trade.

I am Fuentes' owner and I'd still choose Joe Nathan without hesitated.

It doesnt matter either way, saves are like a fantasy crapshoot. You never know who will get more opportunities. Almost like trading kickers in football.
