Heartworm prevention medication?
Normally I go to my veterinarian where my dog is registered to get heartworm/hookworm/roundworms prevention medicine ("Sentinel Green" drug). But I have noticed its price has being going up every year. If I find another veterinarian, can I get the medicine from that other veterinarian without having my dog being a patient of the other veterinarian, or are heartworm medicine given out by prescription only?
What about buying the medicine from a pharmacy, like an online one?
Thanks.

Veterinary hospitals cannot act as pharmacies for non-patients. There needs to be a client-doctor-patient relationship in order for them to dispense any prescription medication.
The majority of the online pharmacies (PetMeds, Pet Pharmacy Plus, Foster & Smith, etc) will fax a form to your vet basically asking for permission to dispense the medication. The vet will either allow or decline & fax it back.

Heartworm medication is prescription, so you will need a veterinarian to authorize any pharmacy (either at a vet or online) to fill it. While some online pharmacies are less expensive, not all vets will work with online pharmacies. You might be able to get the medication from another vet office but they will probably require proof that your dog has had a heartworm test and, depending on their policy, they may not sell it to you unless you become a client.

Ask your vet for the generic form of heartworm prevention, the ingredients are the same, as generic is very cheap.
You need a prescription to get heartworm preventative in the U.S., but there are online dog med pharmacies in other countries (Australia for one), who will send you generic equivalents without a prescription.

You can either ask your vet for generics or ordering online is pretty cheap. You need a perscription but since your pup is currently on preventatives you have a perscription so when you go online they'll ask for your vets info. They'll call and verify the perscription and then your good to go. 1800petmeds and drsfosterandsmith are the two cheapest.
