First of all, the bulbs you're looking at are the wrong type of light - You want to find yourself a Power Glo and a Life Glo bulb.

If you're talking about Imperial Gallons then you want between 30-90 watts, depending on the type of plants you have in your tank. If you're talking about U.S. Gallons then you want less watts per gallon.

There are a few things you need to consider when it comes to lighting.. how deep the tank is, what plants you're going to use, will you be using CO2 injection or Florish Excel at all, are you using good reflectors..

if you have a deep tank (24'' or more) then you will need a lot more light output to reach the bottom of the tank.

Research the types of plants that you're going to have in your tank.. they all have different light needs, and a lot of them have different ways of growing under higher and lower light.

    http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pf...

Glossostigma, for example, is a high light that will spread along the substrate as a carpet when it has 2+ wpg directly on it, any lower then that and it will start to grow upwards instead looking for light.

Anubis speices are low light plants that need to be kept out of high light as it can kill them.

and of course the more light you have, the more likley you are to have algae outbreaks - again this can be kept under reasonable control with the use of CO2 or Florish Excel as lower PH helps prevent algae problems.

If you're using T8 Lighting then the general rule of WPG applies, if you're using Compact or T5 lighting then there are different guidelines altogether since they produce more light then standard T8's which means you don't need as many WPG.

I could write an Essay about this, but that would be more boring then this is atm. :)

What i suggest to you is that you use 2 25w T8 lights, this will provide you with enough light for pretty much every plant you can commonly find at an aquatic store. Buy yourself a cheap CO2 unit (Sugar and Yeast based) and do a little research on the plants you're wanting to keep in the tank.

if you're from england the here's a british site:

Source(s): Aquascapist - most of my planted tanks run between 1-2 watts per gallon (except when growing Glossostigma) to cut out Algae Blooms.

i think the first one is the better deal. the 2nd one the shipping might be higher. but you need a bulb for plants. after you get one you may still have to buy the right bulb. good luck
