I have first refusal on a piece of property. I was called to day and asked if I wanted to buy the property.?

It is river property but I can't believe the price. Any way I refused. I now have to travel into town and take my handicapped wife to sign the papers. Should I be allowed any amount of money for the refusal and having to travel so the sale can be completed???

    Have to agree even with right of first refusal not sure why you most travel to sign off, if they are really getting such a high price I would figure they would take on the added expense and travel out to you to sign off

    Do you have a contract that states you would be compensated for refusing? Probably not.

    Most likely, no you are not due any money for refusing, signing papers and letting the sale go through. You don't get a gold star for doing what you are supposed to do.

    There is no legal reason why you must travel to "refuse." Tell the other party to send you whatever it is they want signed. Sign it, have it notarized (if the other party insists that it be notarized), then return the documents. That's all that is required.

    First right of refusal is that and that only. It would be rare that anyone would agree to traveling expenses or any other expenses. Most of this can be done by mail or fax these days.

    If they can't let the deal go through without your signatures, make them come to you, or at least have them FedEx the papers.

    you dont' need to travel, they will send the papers and you sign and mail them back, notarize them if they insist, that's about it.
