System fan into power supply or motherboard?
Im building a computer and my case has two system fans. Usually the ones I work with have a small connector that goes into the 3 pin on the motherboard, but the ones Im working on now have a bigger connector with 4 pins, the connector is about the size of an rs-232 but just rectangle with 4 pins in it.
My power supply came with a couple of attachment cords that have 2 connectors of the same sort, 2 connectors that allow the fan plugs to go into them, and a small connector with 4 holes that fit in the 3 pins on the motherboard.
Do I throw the attachment on the power supply and connect the fans that way? and if so, do i take the 4 pin female and put it in the 3 pins on the motherboard?
and would it also be better to use one attachment cord with both fans, or have 2 separate cords?
please help, thank you

Generally the power that you find on the motherboard is for a dedicated fan attached to the heat sink above the processor. The 4 pin molex connection fans are usually to help with general cooling of the internal components and not specifically the processor. Plug the 4 pin connections into the Power supply. If you don't have enough connections on the PSU that came with the case to support all the components you may want to consider a larger PSU.

The connectors to your new system fans sound like molex connectors like these: http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2004... The difference between the 3-pin header fans and those using 4-pin molex connectors is that the motherboard can monitor the speed of those connected to it with the 3-pin connection.
The small connector with 4 pins coming from the power supply is usually used to power a floppy drive. http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2004... There are a few graphics cards that use that for auxiliary power as well. Do not connect that to your motherboard.
When looking for a good picture, I ran across this article: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=... Page 14 of that guide shows most of the connectors you're likely to see: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=1...

The motherboard has no capacity of detecting whether the fan is on or no longer. Now, that being stated you are able to rule off the fan situation. i've got faith the rationalization your laptop shutdown ought to be because of the fact of one or extra of here: a) If it is your first time working a interest the CPU might have overheated and in maximum situations led to the laptop to shutdown. sometimes (very rearly) the CPU might have been destroyed yet I noticeably doubt this. b) the laptop close down you assert? in line with risk it grew to become right into a cable from the back of the gadget that had led to this. A "No sign detected" is a hassle-free blunders for the style of subject. c) electric failure - it is led to by potential of one incredibly some laptop compoments and led to the laptop to shutdown or probably malfunction. in view which you have new products I advise attempting in a dummy CPU to work out if it incredibly works. you are able to bypass to a working laptop or laptop keep and ask to purpose a CPU earlier you purchase it to work out if it resolves the subject. i'm hoping I helped ~
