How do I reload Windows XP from CD and get it up to date?

I have an original version of Windows XP (pre-service packs). I am starting over with a new hard drive and would like to understand the time / effort in getting my OS up to date. I know I can run Windows Update after reloading the OS, but for planning purposes is it going make me install all of the SP's and hotfixes in order or will it skip straight to the latest SP?
