How to get rid of skunk smell in house and clothes?
About 2 am last night we smelled and found out our Shetland Sheepdogs just got sprayed by a skunk and now he and the house smells like skunk. Everywhere we go in the house, we smell it. We gave the dog a bath in 1 Qt 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 tsp. liquid soap. Right away and now, we have him at the groomers. The whole house smells, all of your clothes smells. The windows and doors were all but the doggy door was closed. Now I need to do something about that smell. If I cannot find a solution, will I need to call a professional cleaner? Is there a laundry detergent that will remove the smell?

scented women's douche.
put it in a spray bottle and spray everything with it.
it works even better than the skunk recipe.
you can also wash yourself and your clothes, carpets, etc. you can also use it on your dog.
that was told to me by an Animal Control Officer a long time ago, and it works like a charm.
the only thing is that once you see how well it works, you'll be nervous around ladies that use the stuff....
tomato juice DOES NOT work- it makes it WORSE! it makes it smell nasty-
what i'm suggesting ELIMINATES the smell. and it's not a joke, although i am aware that it looks like one.

My dogs routinely get skunked about twice a year (ugh!) then run in the house and rub it on everything! Tomato juice DOES NOT work - it makes everything smell like skunky tomatoes.
Anyway, the Nature's Miracle works pretty good on the dogs with a couple of applications, but you have to let it dry and that's a pain. Also use the peroxide/baking soda formula.
First wash everything that the dog touched and use a little bleach in the wash. Then open all the windows and use Fabreeze room freshener spray. It really does work - my dogs just got skunked last week.
But, it is crucial that you wash everything with the actual skunk oil first or else you'll never get rid of the stink.
DeeDawg - women's douche - seriously?! I'll give it a try nex time.

If the doors and windows were closed, the oil sprayed by the skunk itself didn't get into the house. You are smelling the presence of the odor 'everywhere' until it fades away. Remember, you can smell a squished skunk on the road for a mile in every direction, and for days. The skunk spray is oil based, so water will simply dilute it and spread it around. The odor will linger for several days, maybe less if it rains. Attempting to wash and clean everything in the house will be a waste of time -- since the source of the smell is outside. You could also waste a million gallons of water trying to wash it away outside. Be patient. Call animal control (the dog catcher) and ask them what services they offer in terms of catching and removing the animals. Meantime, get all the trash, garden plants, etc out of the yard, so that they don't find it a nice place to live.

4 cups hydrogen peroxide to 1/4 cup baking soda and 2 tsp dish soap. Put dog in tub. Be sure to close the bathroom door or laundry room door. Put mixture in a container and once it starts to bubble pour on areas where spray came into contact and rub in. Do this until all mixture is gone. Leave on dog for 5 minutes then rinse with warm water.

I just went through this with my dog last week. To remove the odor form your house, look for a product made of chlorine dioxide (I used a product called "Room Shocker." Google it). You can essentially bomb the house with this stuff for a few hours and eliminate pretty much all of the offensive odors in your house. I was honestly surprised at how well it worked. I believe that one application covers 500 sq ft., so purchase appropriately.

The animal control officer and 2 different vets told us to use tomato juice for everything and it works well also. My wife even washed the windows with it, pulled the curtains down and washed them in it also. She even washed the floors in it just to get the smell out. Then we went back and washed everything with regular soap and stuff but it was worth it. We've tried everything else including the douche that this other person mention and it didn't get it all out. People would come in to the house and still smell skunk so we did the tomato juice thing and got it out completely.
Then open all your windows for at least 12 to 24 hours to air out. It's all pain but the dogs smelled much better..and the juice unlike other products don't dry the skin out.

Vinegar works wonders. Take a large bowl of vinegar, and put it in every room. Wash the clothes with a cup of vinegar. Haven't had the experience, but I've heard it works wonders

Tomato juice for the clothes.. not sure how to remove the smell from the air though. I'm not sure if Febreeze is strong enough to kill that smell but you can try that, and Oust

Wash the dogs (I've heard tomato juice works, but don't hold me to that) And open the windows in the house to let it air out. My mom hit a skink with her car once, and it took about three days for it to air out.
