Has anyone ever heard of this?

A 2 year old stallion at my horse back riding lesson barn has a tooth in between his eye and ear. He was born with it and it's a full grown tooth. His owner also took him up to Ohio State University. Has anyone heard of this? Thanks in advance!

Update:

Oh, and the horse has been in a lot of pain since he was developing. The problem is they can't figuire out how to get it out without harming him.

I did some research and I think this is what it is.......

Ear Teeth: Dentigerous cysts, also known as temporal odontoma, temporal teratoma, heterotrophic polydontia, or ear teeth, are relatively rare but well-documented occurrences in young horses. They are composed of sacs containing a tooth or dental tissue that develop where there should not be a tooth.

Most commonly, they occur near the base of the ear and present as a firm swelling sometimes with a draining tract discharging a thick, white fluid. They can, however, appear inside the skull or nasal cavities, where they are much more likely to cause trouble, either by pressure or obstruction.

Since they are true cysts, they are lined by a secretory epithelium (a lining that produces some substance), and they must be surgically removed in order to eliminate the drainage. They are a developmental anomaly and are not considered cancerous tumors, so malignancy is not a risk. Good-quality radiographs are usually diagnostic and complete surgical removal is curative.

The horse in a lot of pain and no one knows how to fix the problem? Maybe putting the horse down should be an option.

Why would someone want to willingly keep an animal in constant pain?

There's a horse who's exactly like that at my trainer's barn, only it causes her no pain. She's actually had one removed from up there, but there is now a second one! As it doesn't cause her any pain, they have found no reason to remove this one. I can ask my trainer if he remembers where this mare got it removed (I'm in IN, so it's probably not too far from you) or you / the horses owner can email him- http://turningpointequinecenter.com/

Never heard of anything like this and i wish that horse was closer to me i would be interested in checking it out...I worked in the dental field for several years and if one of the dentist got a weird case i was right there assisting (i worked in surgery)...i wasn't going to miss out. I would like to see a picture may help others also to figure why this happened and how.

Um... i heard of it because I had that happen to me!

but it was because when I was starting to grow my adult teeth in I was in 2 accidents and the accidents traumatized my adult teeth. I had to have surgery to redirect tooth so it would grow into the right spot.

Maybe the horse had an accident in the womb or when he was really young maybe he hit his head
