Share a bit of useful information?

I posted this in another section earlier but only got two (very good) answers. I am back to the old faithful NB&B section to see if any of you gals have anything useful to share. It does not have to be about babies either. Anything counts. =)

Do you have anything useful to share? That "thing" that no one seems to think about until after the fact... or never at all?

I'll start:

In a power outage situation if you have outdoor solar powered lights in your landscape. Bring them in! It'll provide light for you until the power comes back on. =)

What other interesting "things" do you know? What do you think someone else may find useful in the future?

Baking soda makes for a great alternative to tooth paste to help whiten your teeth or to just use when you are out of toothpaste.

Use the water that you steamed veggies in to water house plants, it doesn't only reuse water, but it actually adds nutrients to your water for the plants.

Eating asparagus and garlic works as a natural pesticide to ward off mosquitos.

Nursing mothers that eat a diet rich in garlic statisucally have babies that nurse longer at the breast, adding some garlic to the diet of a mother with a finicky eatter can prove to be very helpful.

Hair spray works wonderfully to remove ink stains.

When pulling your clothes out of the dryer, hang onto the old dryer sheets to dust off the top of the dryer as well as counter tops around the house, dryer sheets collect dust very well.

When your toddler gets into the stage of ripping jammies off and then diapers, put sleepers on backwards when they go down to sleep, (cut tags out though so they aren't itchy in front.)

A little baking soda with water is the best cure for fast heartburn and stomach distress.

Duct tape or large packaging tape works great for removing lint or pet hair from your clothes when you can't find a lint brush.

    In keeping with the power-outage theme ;

If you're leaving your home for while, say a week, put an ice-cube in a zip-top bag in the freezer. When you get home, check it's shape. If it is flattened or mishaped, it means there was a power-outage while you were gone, all the food in the freezer defrosted then refroze when the power came back out ; you need to throw it out or you risk food poisoning !!!

Also, the back of a spoon (not a knife) is what works best to spread peanut butter on soft fresh bread that tears easily !

If you run out of breast pads, you can use those removable pads in swimsuit tops til you can get to the store. If they get too wet (takes a while) just hand wash real quick squeeze and throw in the dryer for 5 mins and BAM! Theyre ready to wear again.

Source(s): Happened to me today til I could make it to safeway.

If you break a light bulb, trying to remove it, you can use a potato to get it out. Just cut a potato in half, and press it onto the light, and twist.

CLR works great to remove coffee stains form inside the pot.

only thing i can think of at the moment is to wash baby socks and hand mitts and such, or really delicate items in a lingerie bag; keeps them all together, no missing socks, and keeps the delicate items a little more protected even on the delicate wash....

Source(s): also if u formula feed, dr brown's formula pitcher is wonderful! no shaking, so no bubbles and foam and u can make a days worth at the time....it's only about 16 dollars... i keep an 'emergency' diaper bag in my trunk; it has a change of clothes for cool days and one for warm, blanket, extra bottle (drop ins), liners, diapers, wipes, basically everything u would need if u ran out, forgot to refill, or god forbid forgot your regular bag..it's a skip hop double duo and it's huge so it holds everything... i have read ppl say on here that when their babes take off their diaper, they use duct tape to put them on, haven't had to try that just yet.....and i second that it works great for lint; i have 'my' duct tape that hub is forbidden to touch bc it is for my clothes...LOL

When we moved into our apartment our tub was gross... and I scrubbed it with every tub cleaning chemical possible, and nothing brought it clean... the other day my BIL came up with some WD40 he said they use it to clean at work, he took it in there and cleaned the tub and it was shiny and bright white like new!

So if you ever have soap scum, or really any hard stain use WD40!

before your kid can pour a cup of juice, you could put a pitcher thing with a spout at the bottom and put that in the fridge where the kid can reach it and then the kid could just push the button to get the juice out....one step closer to being able to sleep in, in the morning!

if you run out of shampoo, mix baking soda with water into a paste and wet your hair and rub it into your scalp and rinse it out. it works very well :)

run your hands under cold water before making rice krispie treats so the marshmallow doesn't stick to them.

put a piece of bread in a tupperware container of soft cookies to keep them soft longer.

put an egg in a glass of water to see if it's fresh - if it sinks it's fresh, if it rises, it's bad.

    good question :)

Not sure if this really works, but I've heard bananas stay fresher longer if they're separated from the bunch.

If you're afraid of food poisoning, eat a pickle. They counteract (thats why so many restaurants give pickles on their plate)
