Well first off it depends on what setting, i.e. street fighting or ring.

If you’re looking to be a good ring fighter, like in the UFC then really you may need more than 1 martial art.

If you wish to compete in the ring then a good combo would be Muay Thai for when you’re on your feet and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the ground work.

Now obviously they will help you or give you an edge over your opponent on the street, but I wouldn’t say that they are the best for real life situations.

For street fighting I would always recommend Krav Maga whether its against a weapon or not. This takes moves from various different martial arts, and puts them together to be used in a setting where there are no rules, and your life could depend on your actions. It’s specifically designed for this type of setting, where it isn’t subject to rules. It will also teach u to deal with more than one opponent.

To find what’s most effective for you may take some time, I suggest trying out a few different martial arts.

I myself have tried a few, but for the street i find Krav Maga the best.

I also do Wing Chun and find it very rewarding.

But what u must realize is that, what works for me or anyone else may not work for you.

Many people will not agree with what i have said but its just an opinion.

Best of luck with what ever you choose!

It's a close fighting style. It's not really pretty. If you want jump kicks, or spinning back kicks Wing Chun doesn't have it. If you want a fairly effective close fighting art its very effective. Though it's still a striking art form, it doesn't have any real grapling or wrestling moves. And could be susceptible to grappling styles unless you train to counter them or take a wrestling style to supplement that deficiency.

As for just using it for basic self-defence on the street, it is very effective.

Source(s): I started training in Wing Chun in 1976, and still practice it.

heres a question: How effective is it on the ground? According to most experts 90-95% of street fights go to the ground. So, how effective is it once your on the ground? Answer, not very effective at all. Wing Chung is good to deflect punch and manipulate the arm. However, if the oppenent takes to the ground then its all about jujistu.

Its as effective as the skill of the practitioner. The "feel" parts is anticipating ur opponents next move and how to control him

it can be pretty practical, in a stand up situation. If it goes to the ground, they are done.

for the classical styles, it's one of the better ones for practicality.
