Na2O2 + H2O ---> NaOH + O2
the answer is
2Na2O2 + 2H2O = 4NaOH + O2
So on the left hand side there is:
2 x Na
3 x O
2 x H
On the right side there is:
1 x Na
3 x O
1 x H
Basically, it's guess and check
There is a lack of Na and H on the right side,
So I double NaOH (on the right side),
Na2O2 + H2O = 2NaOH + O2
but then there will be too much O on the right side.
So, I'll double the NaO2 on the left side.
2Na2O2 + H2O = 2NaOH + O2
but then there is too much Na on the left side
so make the NaOH on the left x 4
2Na2O2 + H2O = 4NaOH + O2
but there's too much O and H on the right side, so we double the H2O on the left side
2Na2O2 + 2H2O = 4NaOH + O2
and it's balanced.
it works a lot more simply in your head by guessing and checking than it does written down

Na2O2 + H2O --- > 2NaOH + O2 No steps necessary. Just make sure that number of molecules on each side are equal. It's a hit and try method.
