Downloading Transmission. Slow - how to open port? (Mac)?
I have Mac OS X 10.5.7
I have broadband, and both an airport and ethernet connection options.
My download speeds have been ranging from 6 -50 KB/s. Which is extremly slow.
So my port is closed and I have tried the troubleshooting help. The airport utility will not recognize my working internet.
And whenever Im trieing to change my IP address, my internet stops.
This is the first time I've used bittorrented and used transmission.
If you need any more information, please tell me what you need to know and I'll try to add the info.

I think I am motorola and these are the options (how do I know which one is mine?)
motorola9015 seems to be some internet thing i have
also there is no firewall tab under sharing. There is a firewall under security though.
Do you know why my airport utility will not work?
thanks
I thought I had to change my IP adress to become a static IP adress.
I have been doing this for hours. I could really use some help.

You lost me there. What else would you expect to happen?
You can open a port in OS X firewall by going to Apple Menu->System Preferences->Sharing->Firewall tab
Choose some port (high numbers are good) and open it in the firewall. You must also properly forward this port. You can find an illustrated guide for your specific router at http://portforward.com/
If you have some third-party firewall, you'll have to open the port in that as well.
EDIT:
I'm writing this about 10 hours later, since I didn't know you edited your question, so perhaps you won't even see this. If this information is useless to you by now, sorry for the delay.
Anyway:

You don't necessarily have to *change* it. That's a good point though about the static IP; it can make it easier to forward ports. My router lets me forward ports based on hostname, so I don't actually need static IPs for my devices (I use them anyway though). If your router has a similar feature, you don't need to use a static IP, since the port forwarding will dynamically change the IP it is working with in order to work with the device with the hostname you specity.
If your router does not have a feature like that, then you can go ahead and use a static IP if you want.
This doesn't change the fact that your connection will, of course, be interrupted by changing the way in which the client connects to the router, whether or not you actually change the IP address.

Fine. I'm using Panther. I guess it's different in Leopard. Sorry about any confusion.

That's a list of routers. You're supposed to click on the router that you have for a guide with screenshots specifically tailored for that particular model. This is meant to make it easier for you to follow along with the guide. If it somehow made it more confusing for you, I apologise again.
Anyway, hopefully it's working for you now. You can always check to see if you're connectible at http://canyouseeme.org/ by typing in the port number in the field. The site will make a connection attempt over that port and tell you if it succeeded or not.

Does the dsl modem also act as a router? If it is, then that is probably what's blocking your ports. So you will need to forward the ports on both devices.
