I will phrase my answer in two parts:

    Why NDA Lost:

    1. Leaders: L K Advani: Projected as Lauh Purush, but when questioned on Kandahar, it was found that Vajapayee did not even consulted him that means then PM Vajapayee did not have faith on him. His past track record, that is Rath Yatra and post Babri Masjid communal riots were not forgotten by people. Calling Jinnah secular was accepted by Indians. Modi - His role in Gujarat riots was unacceptable to most of the people outside Gujarat. His campaign style was ridiculous.

    2. PM In Waiting: BJP Projected Advani as PM in waiting and in the middle of campaign BJP's top leadership came up with second PM in waiting for next elections that is Modi, that was not acceptable to many.

    3. Star Campaigners: Advani, Modi, Varun all accused of communal violence.

    4. Negative campaign: Personal attack on PM that was one of the main reason of NDA's defeat.

    5. Split in allied: JDU's conflicting statements.

    6. Modi's statements: Budia Gudia statements were not acceptable.

    7. Lack of leadership: Apart from Advani and Modi no one was visible.

    8. Incorrect agenda: Their agenda included Ram Mandir/Ram Sedu but not development.

They came up with a good issue that was Black money but could not reach to the public with the issue and that was hardly a issue that could have given them victory.

    UPA:

    1. Clean PM Candidate: Dr. Manmohan Singh had a clean image.

    2. Good campaign: Projected the work of UPA government, instead of talking against NDA, UPA opted to project the work of UPA government.

    3. Rin Maafi: KISAN RIN MAAFI and Employment Guarantee schemes were two plus for UPA.

    4. Regional benefits: Like MNS gave benefit to congress in Mumbai and Thane and Chiranjeevi gave them benefit in AP.

    5. Development on top agenda.

    6. Rahul Gandhi was liked by voters.

    7. Could successfully encash the achievements of UPA government.

First of all let me tell you one thing, I am really happy to see this discussion going to be some what healthy, your question and details were good and answer specially by Vingeshwar was good. I agree with your all the points but 1, that is 3, in fact this time BJP is ruling in one state in south that has never ever happened. Some of other reasons: 1. BJP created a very confusing signal, between hard liners and soft. Some RSS leaders spoke about welfare of Muslims and Ram Mandir and Ram Setu was also in their agenda. People did not know what is their path? Path of development or again the same Hindutva? 2. I personally feel, Advani's campaign against PM back fired on him. Personal attacks are never good. And star campaigners Modi and Varun Gandhi were not good for BJP. 3. Lacking Vajpayee, BJP was short of leaders. 4. Congress got benefit of BSP misrule in UP, Chiranjeevee's new party in AP, Raj Thakare's new party in Maharashtra. 5. Rahul Gandhi factor worked well.

The NDA lost because the people of India did not believe that they were in safe hands.

BJP has good leaders and equally good workers but has no reach in Southern States and W.Bengal.. Andhra, TN & Pondicherry, Kerala,Karnataka, Orissa and West Bengal accounts for 193 seats, out of which BJP could get only 20 seats. (Karnataka 19 and W.Bengal 1). BJP should come out of its narrow policies of Hindutwa, Hindi Language and should accept the fact that India is Multi racial, religious and language Union of States. Otherwise BJP will become a regional Party.

    -ve campaigning

lust for power only, without considering welfare

    cheap dialogue

    hash strategy

communication gap b/w voters and leaders

    not secular

to an extent lack of leadership

    no youth star

priority to IT rather than EAT (poverty)

no more National Democratic Alliance but Non Democratic Alliance

hey! man don't think UPA had all this...... rather UPA was just a vote against NDA and 3rd. NOT at all in support of UPA

The NDA leader Advani is failed to show the negetive side of UPA government. And the strong hindutwa agenda of BJP made retardation to their popularity including hindus. They made Narendra Modi as next Prime Minister candidate. As Modi's image is not good in people's mind. The strong hindutwa agenda alone can't make them winners. They should regain the friendship face made by the Vajpay Government.

very simple due to their unnecessary lecture .i mean in todays generation public is crazy after rahul and priyanka Gandhi.bjp has no youth generation who has his unique way of thinking. bjp needs young candidates.so they should bring young candidtes to the country level.

    1. LK Advani is not a good leader. He tried to project himself by portraying Manmohan as weak. But LKA is even weaker. BJP was a failure against terrorists themselves.

    2. LK Advani is is really, really old. And, BJP has no youth leaders at all

    3. He gave more importace to Ram Mandir. People dont care about Ram Mandir. What we need is development.

    4. He tried to utilize relgion to get votes.

    5. They completely failed in state administrations (except Gujarat).

In short, there was a single strong reason to vote for BJP.
