Help with a Dell D610 laptop?

I got from my work a Dell D610 laptop (without a hard drive - security reasons and it is out of warranty - they are upgrading).

I added a hard drive, but when I power it on, it does not fully load the BIOS. It gets to the DELL screen and the progress bar just freezes about a fifth of the way in. I can not even get into the settings to chnge the boot sequence.

Is there any way of being able to fix this? I have already tried taking the battery out to totally power the laptop down.

Update:

Asamm> It is not a Hard Drive compatibility problem. I got two laptops and I swapped the hard drives to make sure of that. Both hard drives work in the other laptop, which is also a D610.

if you pushed the button to enter the bios when your computer was booting up? and it still wouldn't enter the bios ? then maybe your bios has froze up or something. most computers have a jumper pin on the motherboard to reset the bios, but i've never had a laptop apart so i'm not sure if there is one on yours or if you could even get to it. just the fact that it is a dell gives me little hope for you lol :0) good luck

Your work place should have Tech Support that could help you. It would be the choice place to get an answer. There may be a security chip installed which prevents you from doing anything.

Watch the black screen while booting up for any list of function keys you need to press. There should be one for set up which should get you into BIOS.
