why won't my 1975 mercury 65 horse boat motor run at no more than an idle speed when throttle is wide open?

i took my boat out for the first time this season and when i left the dock it ran fine for about a half mile then i stopped and put it in neutral and it stalled. had hard time restarting and limped back to dock at idle speed while throttle was wide open, used last years stabilized gas and put new but slightly different plugs in

Yes, you have fuel, and probably ignition issues. Clean the fuel system out, including the carbs, they will have to be removed and disassembled to clean. Check the condition of the cap, rotor, points and condenser. Do a coil power test. Rplace the "close" spark plugs with the correct ones ( AC V40 FFM or equvilent). This motor is 35 years old, don't expect miracles.

Please dispose of your old fuel in an enviormentally friendly manner.

attempt adjusting the initiating/sluggish speed idle up some rpms, yet no longer plenty boat lurches hard into action upon shifting into kit. you're able to try this via tracing the tiller take care of linkage to the place it makes a ninety degree happen. There are 2 toothed gears there and an idle provide up screw. turn the screw in like a million/8 turn for first attempt. Then modify for appropriate idle speed with motor in warmed up working situation.

drain ALL your fuel and ditch the *****, IF you can get your motor to run let it idle,, after about 5 minutes give it a bit of rev, to see if old fuel is out of the system.

It might cough an splutter but it will clear, you just have to hang in there.

when you lay up your craft at the end of the season next time, run the motor IN fresh water for 10Min's, then disconnect the fuel line while the motor is running and let it run dry. with the fuel in fuel can tip it into your petrol car,(if 2 stroke it wont hurt just a little smokey).. IF in doubt ask a Mercury dealer. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND this is only a stop gap to get you out of trouble.
