They were either letting you down nicely,
OR honestly have confidence issues and were afraid of you hurting/leaving them so they left you first.
I've never had it happen to me, but I had a friend who use to do it to guys all the time because she had major confidence issues

Yeah! And now I know this is the most hideous lie of them all! Of course they believe YOU are not good enough for them; but they don't even have the guts to say it!
