What is wrong with my computer/?

For some reason I keep getting a notice that DEP has caused Internet Explore to stop working This happens a lot when I want to go to different sites. I had it up to the Geeks at Best Buy last week to clean it out and fix stuff. I still have the garantee. But I see no difference since then and $140.00. I tried going to DEP but can not uninstall it.I don't even know who it got on here. PLEASE if there are any smarter geeks out there then Best Buy, could you please help me? Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

I am a computer technician and have my own company and feel bad for all those people that go to these Best Buy's and Compusa's to get their computers fixed, more than 50% just end up wasting money and never resolving the root issue.

In regards to turning off your DEP, I would not reccomend that right off the bat as that is Window's way of protecting your files and programs from viruses.

The first thing I would do if you already have not is do a full virus scan on your computer, as if any program is trying to turn of DEP or is turning it off, that usually means that it is trying to do harm to your computer.

Once you do a virus scan and it comes up clean (which I don't think it will) Make sure to scan your system for Adware or Malware & SPyware. If you need a program for this let me know I can recommend several.

If everything comes up clean after then, and you still want to turn it off, here is how.

Go to control panel, then to the System option towards the bottom. When in the system menu, go to advanced, then under performance, choose settings, then Data Execution prevention (DEP), and turn it off.

Feel free to contact me directly via email with further questions.

I used to think it was the wireless modem I had. Because, there would be times when I wouldn't be able to do any thing online, and the shortcut on my desktop would say I have an Excellent Connection. Actually, what it meant was, I have a great connection to my wireless modem and the bars, in the Wireless Network Connection box, would be all full and green! The wireless monitor program would say "You are connect to the modem, but not associated with Internet" or something like that. It's happened to me so many times, I don't think you can avoid it. It always comes back. There's a good chance, it's not your computers. Go Figure!

I would be worried that you got infected with a virus or spyware, sounds like they already cleaned some stuff off. If you're sure you're clean, then I would just turn off DEP. Otherwise a clean install of XP or Vista is your best bet.
