My ferret wont use her litter box outside of cage?
my 8 month old ferret wont use her littler box outside of the cage... and the one inside the cage i can tell she doesnt like using it but she does, but she used to move the box and go behind it but i made it so she cant do that............. but whenever i let her out she always goes on my carpet and its so disgusting, i try to watch her but i cant 100 percent of the time, usually when i catch it she already did it and im too late, its a kinda big litter box and i use yesterdays news, ive had her since easter day and im getting tired of it, i have another ferret and shes 100 percent potty trained, i would be happy if this one could make it 50% of the time...... can anyone give me advice...?
thanks i advance

my ferret NEVER used her little box.... actually neither of them did. I dont believe people that say they can be litter box trained because in my experience, as long as theres a corner to back into, theyre goin potty.... sorry, and good luck!

A quick trick that only works for some ferrets is first spray the area with a mixture of water and vinegar. It will help kill any smells that might attract her. Then after that dries, sprinkle the area with white pepper. The white pepper tends to deter the ferrets. BUT that only works with some ferrets.
When my ferret goes outside of his litter box, i punish him. He's slowly learning. I throw him back in his cage. I also put his nose in his mess and tell him no. When he does go in his cage I reward him with a treat and lots of praise.
If things become a big problem just put down newspapers where she likes to go. Therefore it doesn't get on your carpet and all you have to do is roll up the newspaper.
I've had ferrets that weren't potty trainable. It happens.
Good Luck. It just sounds like your baby needs a bit more discipline.

well, i to have a ferret like that. i have a litter box that has clips on the back of it. (to hook it on the cage) Ferrets love to hide and discover new things....what I suggest is that you go to a pet store or somewhere to get pet supplies and purchase a cat littler box that has something you can hangup on cage or clip on. it works, get one and your ferret will soon know that the box is there to stay and can't be moved. And maybe when the ferret is out... give it treats it likes to lead it to its bathroom. Never scold unless it goes on the carpet and every time you see the ferret use the restroom where it needs to...encourage the ferret. So its great for you and the little ferret!

Unfortunately, you just have to be consistent. Out of our 4 kids, the one that is litter-trained the best (he goes about 90% in the box) is the one my boyfriend trained. He was much more consistent than I was with our other 3 kids (who vary between 65%- 85% consistency).
Watch your ferret when you let him out of the cage. Chances are, the first thing he'll do is go to the bathroom. Watch him and the moment he starts backing up, pick his booty up and drop him in his litter box! If he climbs back out, pick him up again and put him back in the litter box repeatedly until he goes.
Also, do you have enough litter boxes around the room? Outside of the cage, in our 12'x12' ferret room we have 3 litter boxes placed strategically. Put the litter boxes where he most commonly has accidents. Also, make sure the litter boxes are large enough. They like to be able to fit all 4 footsies in the box when they go.
Just be consistent. Watch him when you let him out. And keep your eye on him while he's playing.

Well sadly until she gets used to it you'll have to watch her. I watch my ferret because he's new to our house so each time I see him starting to squat I move him into his litter box.
Also I read somewhere...as not so pleasing as it sounds...She was a vet and said to pick up the droppings and move it to the littler box.
Though Ferrets won't go in it if it's dirty because they like to be clean, but also...they won't go somewhere if their scent isn't on it...kinda a double negative but oh well...
I hope some of this might help sorry it's not much it's just one of those things thats different with each ferret.
Best of luck!

Have you changed the type of litter? Perhaps there is a smell with the box they aren't happy with either. It could simply be the change of environment. I have to agree with the answer of finding a Ferret group/message board. Best of luck!
