Going to Australia in July, but first time since I got a cell phone. Will it work so I can catch up with mates?
I have an LG phone from Alltel here in Kansas. The customer service people in my town have no clue if my phone is compatible in Australia. I will be meeting some of my mates at the footy at the MCG, Kardinia Park, Colonial Stadium while in Melbourne and Geelong.
Any advice on this? Thanks.

HEY GFC
Yeah, like the two above me said, it would be possible if you had "roam" on your phone, but will be heaps expensive.
If your phone is unlocked you should be able to get a pre paid sim card.
Are you wanting to call friends within Australia, or call back to the US?
If you just want to make calls within OZ, a prepaid handset would be the way to go.

I am going to New Zealand in July and I was told that if I do use my mobile in New Zealand it will be super expensive. Then they told me just to buy a new New Zealand sim and if the sim card is compatible with my phone then I will be charged cheaper rates, you can probably ask the people to give you the same number as your american number.
If i were you I pop into a telstra or crazy johns shop when i arrived in australia. They are helpfula nd just tell them your situation and then will sort something out.
Good Luck.
I hope geelong loose.
