Depression help for a single mom?
I am a single mom of 2 young kids. I love them very much but I have been in a severe depression for a long time. It's gotten so bad recently and I need to get help before it has a negative affect on my kids and their development. But I don't have any money for even the co-pay on therapist visits. I'm barely making the bills as is. Does anyone have any ideas on low cost help? (I'm in Houston, TX)

~ Hey there - sorry to hear that you are going through a tough time- especially with the little ones looking on.
Prayer is what always helps me- I really hope that things get better for. I am a single mom of 3 kids also and recently divorce I went thru a pretty rough time myself- Just take things one day at time- try not to worry about things that you do not have control over and pray believing that GOD will give you the guidance and strength to make through whatever situations you are faced with.
Set small goals for yourself and when you start accomplishing them you'll slowly start to feel better.
Try talking to other moms with children about your age- take the kids to park - get out of the house out of the usual routine of things.
I hope things get better for you so that you can be there for your kids the way they need you to be. And don't forget you've got to take care yourself 1st so that you will be able to take care of them.
I'll be praying for you.

You could call your local hospital, if they have a mental ward & speak to them about your situation. Most generally have a mobile crisis unit as well, that will come to you. There is also a suicide hot line # in every phone book. Though this may sound drastic & not your situation, you can explain yourself & 9 times out of 10 they will direct you to free or bare bones mental health care even w/o it being a mental health emergency. There are many people who do work but fall between the cracks to afford co-pay therapy. You would most likely need to go through the hospital system some, to qualify for free care...i.e., forms to fill out, waiting for your 10am app. that leaves you waiting till 11am & so on. Don't believe everything you hear about this route, there are some pretty hip therapists that do stints at hospitals & if you latch on to someone ( your not obligated to stay w/someone you don't feel is right for you) you could follow them when or if they leave (the better ones like to keep their patients even if you build a sliding scale payment plan). It's not the quick way, but it's a way. Also most times they can refer you to super cheap mental health clinics that can get you in the door for $10.- an appointment, So get your feet wet & start inquiring with the free services that are available, so that you have a list of names, numbers & addresses. Don't give up, though it may include alout of red tape & frustrating bureaucracy, you can find a free or affordable match. The darkness of depression can be your shrine or your shroud, drop any stigma you may feel and become the huntress in your quest to a deeper, better, happier you. Remember life sucks for people that don't try everything they can to pull themselves up. Try & get to the place where it sucks cause it was a bad day...not week, not month, not year. Find the support to help encourage your thinking about this reality. Your post suggests that your heart, intelleigence & focas are not out-numbered by your depression. Also if you do move forward w/what i've suggested often times a therapist will work with you & provide phone sessions being that your a single working mother who might not have the time to drive there or wait. Take care of you like you do your kids, all the best

Yes...I agree with the first responder. Call a hotline in your state and the volunteers that answer the phone should have some practical advice for your depression. They will also have contact numbers of places that you could go to for help within your price range or maybe even free clinics.

Hi , the best thing to do is talk to someone you trust like a family member , best friend , doctor .
The main thing is not to lock your problems inside you as it makes it worse.
