Should my dependent child claim dependents on his taxes?

My son is having a lot of taxes taken out because the tax form did not have a space to show he is a dependent. How should he claim on his taxes?

Actually, the very first question essentially asks if you're a dependent. If you are, you don't put anything on that line (A).

If he wants to make sure he doesn't owe, and he is, in fact, your dependent, then he needs to claim -0-.

On his tax return, he doesn't get his exemption, since you do.

    Good luck! :0)

A dependent cannot claim dependents on their tax return. Dependents generally pay HIGHER taxes than someone who is not a dependent since they lose their personal exemption. For that reason someone who can be claimed as a dependent should file their W-4 at work as Single and 0 withholding allowances. This does result in the highest amount of tax being withheld but also assures that they won't owe when they do file their returns.

A dependent can claim a dependent on his actual tax return. But it sounds like you are talking about his W-4. If he is your dependent he should claim zero allowances on his W-4 - otherwise he'll probably end up owing when he files his return, and maybe owing penalties for underwithholding.

The amount withheld is not affected by whether or not he is a dependent.

When he files his return (Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ), there will be a box to check to indicate that he is a dependent. If too much tax was withheld by his employer, then the government will refund the excess after he files his return (Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ).

If his only income is from wages and the total expected income is less than $5700 for 2009, put exempt on the W-4.

If the income is higher, put single 0 or single 1.

First, I do not think that someone who is dependent can claim dependents themselves. That said, he just needs to increase the number of allowances on his W-4.
