As far as I know it wasn't mentioned in any of the books. The first film said he was a seeker, but later, JKR stated that he was a Chaser in a Scholastic interview.

He was a Chaser. I think its mentioned in the first book, shortly after Harry is told that he will play for the Griffindor team because Ron is cleaning the trophies and he sees James Potters name on one ot them.
In the movie they changed it as the trophy shows that James Potter played seeker.
