Has anybody noticed that an answer to this question:

How do I open my jammed locker?

is about 1000 times likelier to get picked if it looks like this:

I've jammed my locker before, and it's likely because you have too much junk in it. Try banging on the door or have the janitor or teacher get a special key to open it. And make sure you have the right locker and combo.

as opposed to it looking like this:

bangg onn the doooor or get it unlokkked w a speciialaal keyyyy.

Do you guys agree that grammar, spelling, and basic capitalization matters, even if the answers are essentially the same? Just wondered if i was the only one in the world like it :P

Thanks for your time :)

    Well, of course.

This is a website where people are looking for information, and they're going to go for the most coherent and articulate answers because, to be frank, nobody wants to have to sit and interpret "bangg onn the doooor or get it unlokkked w a speciialaal keyyyy" when they just want to know how to open the damn thing.

The easiest way is to consider that, since there are 7 + 5 = 12 large marbles, and 5 of these are yellow, the probability that a marble is yellow given that it is large is 5/12. -- However, you're correct that it's one of those P(A|B) type questions ... these are known as "conditional probability" questions. P(A|B) means "the probability of A, given B." We are asked the probability that the marble is yellow, given that it is large. So, let A = the event that the marble is yellow, and let B = the event that the marble is large. Then, we are asked to find P(A|B). By the definition of conditional probability, P(A|B) = P(A∩B) / P(B) In this case, P(A∩B) = the probability that a marble is both yellow AND large. Since there are 5 large, yellow marbles out of 20, P(A∩B) = 5/20 = 1/4 P(B) is the probability that a marble is large. Since there are 7 large, red marbles and 5 large, yellow marbles, the total number of large marbles is: 7 + 5 = 12, out of 20. So, P(B) = 12/20 = 3/5. Substituting these values, P(A|B) = (1/4) / (3/5) = 5/12

I totally agree with you. Grammar and spelling matter especially since everyone learned that stuff in like the third or fifth grade. There is also the handy spell checker that tells you if you've spelled things wrong. Typing like this (bangg onn the doooor or get it unlokkked w a speciialaal keyyyy) just makes the person look like an idiot and there is no excuse for it.

I hear you like to haggle people with beliefs different from yours. Dont be mad that I'm in my mid twenties, look like a Barbie doll, and attract the most fabulous specimens of 18-21 year olds.

    Lay off you anti-sexual weirdo.

Who cares if this doesn't fit in with the pregnancy topic...no matter where it is, it's going to get answers. It's not like it clogs up the boards. People need to stop being so darn touchy.

But to answer your question. People tend to pick the answers of the people they relate to. For opinion questions, they pick the answer that is closest to their own opinion. For informative answers...they pick the answer that's closest to how they act and talk. Brings special treatment to a whole new level.

I guess it depends on who you're communicating with. If the asker identifes better with an "answerer" who is a moron, then I guess they are more likely to get picked. I have to admit it blows my mind as well.
