doesn't the first amendment guarantee that the U.S. is not founded on Christian values?
I mean, if it gives people freedom of religion, and god is a jealous god, doesn't that mean that our forefathers were giving god the finger? I mean those people with the golden calf in the old testament would have been accepted in the U.S. and protected from nut jobs like Moses and his jealous god

Big Fail for a lot of you guys
The First Amendment grants all Americans the Freedom FROM!!! the evil tyranny that religion can become because freedom from religion is the only possible way that a minority can ever have Freedom of Religion
The Great American Fairy Tale is that in order to escape religious persecution in England the Pilgrims decided to sail to America so that they would have the freedom to practice their religion as they saw fit
Stop!
As this point in the story every school -kid in America assumes that that freedom of religion applied to those who were not Pilgrims ...and nothing could be further from the Truth
The Truth is that the Pilgrims only wanted freedom of religion for themselves ....and nobody else
The repressive theocracy that was Massachusetts Bay Colony provides more than ample proof of that statement.
Freedom of religion finally came to America when Roger Williams [upon threat of being deported for disagreeing with MBC] escaped across Narragansett Bay and founded Providence RI as a place where all people could worship their god as they saw fit
The Framers knew enough about history to understand exactly how evil the Cross and Crown coalition could be to believers and non believers alike
When the Framers had the opportunity to make this a legal Christian Nation they wisely hit their brakes and said No ..and we should all be glad that they did.

Yep. People came to America for *religious freedom*, not for Christian freedom.
'Course, that doesn't really stop people from forcing his will on others.
lol. Freedom OF Religion, not FROM.
I would assume that if people have the freedom of their own religion, people would be free to not have one either. And say that someone is of another religion, like Buddhism. If Christians work through the government and make a law off of something in the Bible, they're forcing their beliefs on someone else, therefore breaking the "freedom of religion."
We came to the United States because (of what the person same below) escape the religious tyranny in England. If you're forcing your beliefs onto the citizens even if they're not believers, you're doing the same thing that was the reason we left England in the first place.

The first white settlements in North America were mainly the result of escaping religious tyranny in Europe. The founding fathers recognized that it was also a possibility here, so they expressly forbade state sponsorship of any religion because of it.

You have it all wrong.
Freedom OF religion--- OF---not "from."
That means the government can not interfere with the free practice of religion.

Hellius, there is a BIG difference between an individual attempting to force their beliefs upon a person, and the GOVERNMENT forcing people to believe in a state-sanctioned religion. If you don't see the difference there, and the ramifications thereof, you have a real problem.

That's right!
America was founded on giving God the finger!
That's why America is an atheist nation! The way God intended!

The amendments do not apply when they interfere with political agenda's.
It is, however, not unlike the bible.
They are interpreted to suite any situation.

No, it just means they were tolerant of other religions.
Edit: The constitution was based on christian values, but the founding fathers did not make it 'christian nation'

The history books tell us that our nation was founded on religous principle............the people who came here came here to escape religious persecution. They wanted to be free to worship .

it just means that there cannot be a 'state run religion' (like the church of england)
