How come the federal government doesnt fire people for being gay but the military does?

If you work for the Dept of the Treasury or the Dept of Energy and your gay but are competent and professional they can't fire you,

but a guy in the military who has over 2 million dollars invested in training is being kicked out (the guy in question has 18 years in and an Air Medal)

Update:

we kick people out who are competent - its ridiculous

Update 2:

In researching this question I discovered Norman Schwarzkopf - Colin Powell - and George HW Bush have won the Air Medal

Update 3:

ive been to sea 2 months - with gay people who didn't make it "open" - total professional

Because there are a lot of ignorant people in the military. Most smart people wouldn't dare join. The vast majority of the people in the service aren't the most well-rounded, educated, upper crust individuals. The ones who are mostly consist of officers.

Because in most other federal jobs you are not bunking and showering with your co-workers. If you find another federal job that has forced close living conditions then I'd be in favor of firing them there as well.

And no you could not create segregated units because then they would whine that they were only being sent into danger because they were gay.

Don't ask don't tell works. Leave it alone or we will have to go back to seek and throw out regarding gays in the military.

People are allowed to be gay and be in the military. Clinton instituted "don't ask, don't tell."

This means that a person's sexual orientation isn't known.

The only reason a person would be kicked out of the military would be if they behaved in a way that proved to be a defense or security threat. People have been kicked out of the military for having heterosexual relationships also...if they proved a threat to the military operations.

The military is no place for social experimentation. No one who is "competent" is kicked out. To have their homosexuality made obvious is a violation of military rules. If they cannot follow the rules they have proven themselves very incompetent.

The don't ask don't tell policy is put into place for this reason. For one it a person strait out says they are a homosexual, what do you think the heterosexuals in your unit would think. They might think this "Has this guy been looking at me sexually while I was showering?" Now you just violated that persons right of privacy. Everyone has comfort levels that must be respected or you will see an increase in sexual harassment claims.

There are basically no qualifications that any government worker has (even the President), but an armed soldier is more important than that and is protecting our freedoms every day.

Gay people are predisposed to be good government workers, but would get all icked-out over having to hold a gun and fire it at big burly men on the other side.

I think it's because military law is different than federal law. It's like how women can't fight in combat. That's a clear example of segregation.

people are wrongfully thinking that that these guys would rape them or something equally stupid.

isnt great that we allow people who torture innocent civilians for no reason or rape the children of the homes they pillage because they havent gotten any recently?

how is that any better than a gay who can control himself serving beside straight guys when we have pretty bad enrollment in the military as it is

That is strange, seeing that the military IS a part of the federal government. It's also strange that the federal government hasn't passed legislation for the private sector preventing job discrimination against gays. It happens very often, but isn't talked about.

EDIT: Ron Johnson, you are too stereotypical.

We fired some of the most important and hard-to-find people, Arabic translators, in a time of war because they were gay. Pathetic and inexcusable.
