"Navajo" is a Spanish corruption of a Tewa Indian phrase that meant something like "those who farm the canyons." The word that a Navajo uses to describe himself is "Diné" with means "the people."
Also, the name "Apache" comes from the Zuni word "Apachu," which means "enemy." The Apache call themselves "Ndéé" which also translates to "the people."
The Navajo and Apache languages are closely related.
