My computer doesn't notice any disks in the CD drive, how to fix?

when ever i put any disk the in CD drive the computer doesn't notice them, so then ill go to START>my computer>(double click CD drive)

but it always says INSERT A DISK INTO THE DRIVE D:.

anyone know how to fix this?? i've tried movies, pc games, and software CD's but sometimes it dosen't even notice those.

Update:

i've unistalled both and the restarted my computer, but it still dosen't get them , & no i didnt put them in back wards. Though i dont see how it could be broken when i never really used it. I;ve only used it about 3-6 times since i've gotten it. I've also tried updating it but it says the wizard could not find a better hardware then the software you have currently installed.

Update 2:

i dont kno much bout computers, so i wouldnt want to open it up without knowing wats wat.

If it sometimes recognizes some disks, try running a cleaning disk (you probably never have, and you should every 10 hours of actual running time - time it has a disk in it). If cleaning it doesn't fix the problem you probably need a new drive. (Relax - you can replace it yourself, and you can get a good drive for well under $50.)

If the cleaning doesn't work you can try this. Open up your computer. Unplug both of the wires that connect the cd rom to the motherboard.

Then turn on your computer for a moment. Then after you turn it back off plug the wiring of the cd rom back into the motherboard.

If this works your computer will think you have put in new hardware and it will be able to read the disks you put in it.

You probably put them in upside down or you need to format blank discs.

Or you could try uninstalling your drive in device manager and rebooting.

*EDIT* Sometimes you may need to erase/format blank Cd's for your computer to open it. A program like Nero may help. Insert and right click your CD and choose format, (InCD Format in Nero's case), hopefully your discs should be fully functional.

If that doesn't work you may need to install a new drive. If you can't do that, (it's a relatively easy thing to do; use the internet for how to), then you're left with the option of taking it to a computer shop and paying if there is no-one else around who will do it for free.

You might want to think about getting an external DVD drive as well.

    Good luck!
