Frame repair; crack where the chainstays meet the bottom bracket.?
A friend has a Specialized road bike with Columbus tubing and has found a crack in the frame where the chainstay meets the bottom bracket. Its a failure like this repairable or is it best to just get a new frame?

Had a old Colnago that did the same thing.
"columbus" suggest theat the frame is Probably a cormoly AX ,SX or SPX tubing.
The frame COULD be repaired by taking it to a Brazer(a special kind of welder(but not really welding) who would Heat the flanges of the bottom bracket(that hold the chainstay) to remove the chainstays and then replace it or them with new one(S) (I actually had this done twice back in the 80's)
that being said, I strongly suggest not doing this! any brazing done after the bike was originally made actually weakens the whole rest of the frame!(Hence the reason I had to have it done twice!)
on top of that , not one brazer that is willing to do this work will warranty the work(too much risk of failure and liability)
my suggestion is to take the parts off the frame and get a new frame. then make the old frame a piece of artwork!

Knowing what frame/bike this is would make this question easier to answer. Just saying "Columbus" doesn't give the whole picture. Columbus made tubesets for Specialized in both steel and aluminum alloys through the years. Generally, such a repair is feasible on a steel frame. If it's lugged steel, he'd be looking at replacing the chainstay, since welding the crack in the tube could create more heat than the brazing at the lug could handle. If there's nothing special about the frame, it may not be cost effective in any case.

Stewies dad has it this time. If the frame is lugged steel it can be repaired by replacing the chainstay. If it is aluminum it can't be repaired. If you really want to know why edit your question to ask this and I'll give the long answer.

1) Scorpio- very manipulative, controlling, moody and JEALOUS as ****! Horrible to be around. Even if you are friends with them - they're probably manipulating you in some way that your not aware of, yet (mainly the woman!) 2) Aquarius- for me, they care too much about everyone else instead of the most important people in front of their damn face. They are known to be the 'humanitarians' of the zodiac, but I've known some aquarians that have done some of the most inhumane things to people! I don't get a long with them. 3) Gemini- for obvious reasons! HAHAAAAA 4) Cancer- Too ******* clingy and whiny! They complain about everything like as if other people are supposed to fix their problems. Too emotional (especially the men)! The females are DRAMA Queens!
