Is it too cliche to write a romance novel set in ancient Rome?
I have an idea for a romance novel set in ancient Rome during the Gallic wars. The hero would be a roman soldier and the heroine the daughter of a village chief in Gaul. I want to write something unique and different so I'm trying to stay away from cliche themes. Is this too cliche? Too common maybe? What do you think?

In my opinion romance can not be unpredictable, that's why it is such a bad genre to write for. I always have romantic scenes in anything I right because it gives great opportunities for description of the characters and their emotions, as in the scene they are supposed to be in love, and entwined, and paying attention to each others every last detail. So therefore you can take up a page of writing just talking about a single kiss. But whilst doing this I would never make this a main plot, or even a viable side plot for that matter. It would merely be a one off scene. That way the reader gets an understanding of the lead characters love interest, and also feels a sense of aesthetic enjoyment in the characters happiness. It also Makes the character more relate-able if they are subject to a love interest. Yet at the same time, there is no need for a happily ever after. A romance can't really be unique as its all been done before in books, films, and real life. The crux of the matter is that a romance is at its best when its turned into a tragedy, yes its a sadder outcome for the reader, but its significantly more interesting and fresher than living happily ever after. But again that is just my opinion, good luck :)

I think it's fine, although this reminds me a bit of the book I'm reading called "The Light Bearer" by Donna Gillespie. The hero is a Roman aristocrat, and the heroine is the daughter of a chief from Germania. She's a warrior princess type, there's a lot of political intrigue and corruption, etc., etc.

Too cliche? That's a great idea! I love it!
OMG. I just thought of something really ... really... really cool.
MAYBE, the roles for the two characters could be switched. Like, he's a prince, and she's a girl who stole away and joined the army to protect her brother or something. And they meet, and they hit it off! And then he and she join forces and they become a great warrior duo and eventually there's a statue or a star constellation surrounding their story or something.
Maybe the beginning of the novel can be an archeological excavation group in present day, and they uncover something about the lovers' adventurous story, and then the story goes to the past to explain it all in true colors.
:)
I think that would be awesome :) but your idea is still really really cool.

It's not too common. i think it's pretty original. Just get your ancient Rome fact right. Trust me, people will notice that ha ha. If you want to make it unique, just make their personalities different than what people would think. Think about the scenarios you want to put your characters in, too? Just e-mail me if you have anymore questions,k? I'm into writing novels, and romance happens to be my forte ha ha.
