What is shore duty like in the Navy? How long does sea duty last and shore duty last for 5 year enlistment?

Update:

When I finish A school I will be an E-4. I am entering as a E-3 and I will take my test for E-4 right after I get out of A school or I might get lucky and finish top in my class and get promoted to E-4.

Shore duty is sweet, you get to go home every night. Its like a regular job almost. You could be doing various different jobs on base from pushing paper in a office somewhere to picking up trash on the base it all depends on where they need you at.

Sea duty depends on your rate and rank mostly for the younger guys with the lower ranks sea duty tends to be longer 5yrs on a ship or two. but once you finish sea duty you can head to shore duty

Don't take the E-4 out of school they will make you extend your contract for 1 more year. You can take the test and make E-4 that way

With exceptions, the Navy usually tries to rotate their people between shore and sea duty in order to be fare. Two years was the norm when I was in. A persons specialty can make a difference also since for some ratings there is more sea duty than shore.

Another consideration is that some assignments (even though they are at a shore station) are considered sea duty for rotational purposes. An example of this is duty for a Hospital Corpsman assigned to the Marines at a Marine base as part of the Fleet Marine Force.

Shore duty is ssssssoooooooo easy! Usual sea duty is in 2-4 year terms. Shore is about the same. But on a carrieror ship you could be stationed there for 4 years and only go out to sea twice. I was forward deployed on the Kitty Hawk from 2003-2005. I was always gone!

It really depends on the job you chose to do. If you are on a carrier, the average sea time is six months. same with submarines. Sea time can be less on other ships (depending if it is war or peace time)

Shore duty is like any other branch. You go to work, work your shift and go home. (unless we are at a war time status)

what's your rating? your sea/shore rotation is mainly dependent on that. depending on how long A school is your entire first term could be sea duty.
