does violence solve problems?

the idea 'violence never solves anything' came up in the office. i argue that violence actually solves everything. i'm a non-violent person, but it seems to me that violence solved every major world conflict from the Gulf War to WWII to the Punic Wars of the Rome and Carthage. I cited the example that in a trailer park in Arkansas, a couple could be arguing over whether or not to have lima beans for dinner. with a swift punch to the eye, the man settled the problem and they were not having lima beans.

is it right? no. does it creates more problems down the road? yes... rome eventually fell, europe eventually turned on america and after iraq terrorists and extremists eventually became a bigger problem than ever... eventually that woman getting beat will either kill that hillbilly or take him to court... but it did solve the problem at hand for the time being.

it seems to me that 'peaceful' resolutions just allow the dispute to continue indiscriminately and indefinitely in a quieter fashion.

do you agree or disagree? why?

It all depends on your time frame. Yes, the hillbilly solved the problem for the moment. But his solution of punching his wife in order to have lima beans resulted in his death (or his imprisonment) some years later, which is a considerably bigger problem than a disagreement over lima beans.

The same logic works for a drug addict. Yes smoking crack will make him feel better right now, but will lead to abject misery later down the line. It seems the seductiveness of violence's efficiency is just an illusion. The problem will only boomerang back with more vicious intensity than before.

Violence, believe it or not, has basically been on the decline since the first homo sapiens were around. We're just less tolerant of it these days (which I think is a good thing), and so what violence there is seems like a huge deal. Jumping back a few centuries or millennia, there's no question that violence was more common then. Violence is a huge part of the animal kingdom, of which we're members. Wolves and gorillas don't talk things out; they exert physical dominance. It's in our genes, and it takes a lot of effort from society to muffle those urges. As for whether or not violence is effective, it is incredibly effective - in the short term. There have been numerous studies, however, that indicate that (for example) when you punish a child by hitting, the behavior you're punishing decreases for a few days or so. But after that, it skyrockets to levels far above than before the hitting. So if you hit your child because he's swearing, he'll stop swearing for a little while. But in a week, he's going to be swearing up a storm. I think violence amongst adults works the same way. It's effective if there's an emergency and a certain behavior needs to be stopped immediately, but it is NOT suitable as a long-term solution.

You're absolutely right. Violence stops everything ... for a while, then the other side re-groups and the whole things starts all over again

The trick is to evolve a little. Move up a gear to the point where you're thinking in the long-term

Violence is easy. The problem is - the other side learn nothing from your argument - you've just blown them back to the stone age!

What becomes of the perpetrator? Will you get away scot-free? Do you lose something of yourself - perhaps become a danger to yourself and others through what it took for you to become violent ?

Violence only breeds greater violence. "An eye for an eye"? No - I want a limb. You want a limb - I want a life. You want a life - I want... Where does that stop?

Peaceful resolutions may appear to allow a dispute to continue. It is the most economical means of resolving a problem, in a way where innocent parties don't get involved.

Diplomacy solves a problem where there is no easy solution.

Violence just precipitates a cycle that doesn't end. Violence is the hand pushing the Merry Go Round of misery that only serves to make us all sicker and sicker until we just want to just off the ride in motion.

The world isn't dying because of violence though, only mankind is dying. The world is just waiting for us to either do ourselves in or stand up to the madness within ourselves and stop the cycle of answering violence and terror with more of the same.

it may solve the current problem, yes.

but that almost immediately leads to other problems.

example: WWII had many innocent people, as well as soldiers, being killed. this not only hurt them, but the millions of families.
