It's almost akin to the Olympics or the World Cup, the teams "lobby" the league for the rights to host the event. The All Star weekend is big bucks for the city that gets the "rights" to have the game. Cities will lobby the league because it's such a big winfall for that city. MLB, who knows what are the deciding factors on who they pick. Alot of politics is involved I'm sure, hence my reference to the Olympics and World Cup site comparison.

Source(s): Edit my "weekend" comment. The MLB all star game is on a weekday, however, they do have a three day "festival" of activities. Sorry.

Individual teams bid on the Game.

MLB reviews the bids and a committee selects one.

There are a few guidelines that go into selecting a host site.

    1. Host league alternates each year. MLB made a rare (possibly unique) exception in 2006-07, when the NL hosted twice.

    2. MLB has a strong preference for showcasing newer ballparks.

    3. Don't repeat a given host too quickly. Typically it takes 20 years or more to re-host.

    4. The city, particularly the ballpark area, has to be up to snuff in world-class facilities. Selig wants a presidential suite, sort of thing. And there has to be a convention center that can handle the Fan Fest, as well.

I wait until late June to start voting. When they open the voting guys have hardly played. Let's say this was an example for a leaderboard for AS voting: NL 1B: 1. A Pujols 2. P Fielder 3. D Lee 4. R Howard 5. J Votto I try to vote for the best players, but if Albert Pujols is the best player, and Joey Votto is the second best NL first baseman, I'll probably vote for Votto because Pujols is already going to the AS game.

Bud Selig chooses the site a few years in advance.

2009: Busch Stadium (St. Louis Cardinals)

2010: Angel Stadium (Los Angelos Angels)

    2011: Chase Field (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Source(s): Good luck to all teams!

    1) New Stadiums

    2) Who hasn't hosted in a while

    3) Last year of Stadium
