2008-2009 NBA Coach of the Year?

Does anyone else think that Mike Brown should not have been coach of the year? I thought maybe he deserved it at first, because of the Cavs record. But I didn't pay much attention to the Cavs because I didn't watch. But after watching the Cavs-Magic series. I don't understand why he got it. He seemed clueless and did absolutely nothing to help the Cavs. Van Gundy made him look a little foolish, even with his own odd techniques and being dubbed "master of panic" by Shaq, and being questioned by Howard during the series with the Celtics.

Mike Brown has the best player in the NBA (arguably) so there's not much strategy involved. The game plan should be simple, get LeBron the ball. While I don't think he's a horrible coach, during the Magic series I certainly didn't see a good one. I think even Doc Rivers deserves it more, barely missing the Eastern Conference Finals after you thought you'd have Garnett in the playoffs, then discovering you won't. And then Leon Powe went out, too. They won games when Paul Pierce was out because of foul trouble, and Ray Allen in another game. The C's went 62-20 despite not having KG for 25 of those games. They did a lot better than people expected, writing them off without KG. Many thought the Magic would go 4-1, or even sweep them.

Or Rick Adelman, who managed to help take the Lakers to 7 games without Tracy McGrady, and some of it without Yao, too. Or even Mike Woodson.

But I really think that Nate McMillan was snubbed. He took the second youngest team in the NBA and made them a certain playoff team after missing last year. And that's without any major changes in the lineup. Many people didn't think Portland would be that good. Before the season even started I knew Portland had a good chance to be one of the top 4 teams in the Western Conference. Mainly because I live in Washington and so I know Brandon Roy and Nate McMillan very well. He was also a good choice for the 2004-05 season, although I think Mike D'Antoni was just as deserving.

The Cavs were expected to be good this year, the Blazers however, came as a surprise to many people. That is why I think Nate got robbed of coach of the year. They are going to be good. They'll probably do very well next year.

What do you think?

I would have gone with either...

Eric Spoelstra: He had a really good turnaround from last season. Miami had the second worst (?) record in the league to the 5th best record in the East.

Stan Van Gundy: No one expected the Magic to have the 4th best record in the league, this season AND he out coached Mike Brown in the Eastern Conference Finals.

I'll go on the opposite tack. I think the Cavs struggles against the Magic showed what a great job of coaching Brown did during the regular season. The team is literally LeBron and a supporting cast of second or third-tier players. A single player, no matter how great, simply can't get it done in the NBA playoffs.

The only reason Brown looked clueless against the Magic is because there wasn't a clue out there to be found. He tried a bunch of different strategies, but they didn't matter because the Cavs simply didn't have anyone who could even come close to slowing Howard down. The Magic exposed the Cavs as a team with a serious talent deficiency after LeBron, and for them to win 60 games is an indication to me that Brown did some great coaching during the regular season.

I agree...Nate McMillan turned a .500 team who just missed the playoffs into a 4th seed. Very impressive. On the other hand Mike Brown didn't do much coaching throughout the season and the team's talent was the main reason for their success.

Rick Adelman definently deserved it...Scott Brooks deserved a pat on the back as well..He took over a 3-29 Thunder team and they played very well at the end of the season and won 23 games i think..

Brown shouldn't have won it. It's clear now.

    My pick would be Adelman.

That's what you get for giving awards before the playoffs.
