Could you give me a few recommendations for songs to sing at my prom, & feedback on the ones already selected?
Tomorrow night is my senior prom, and though we have an awesome DJ who will be providing us with great tunes, I’ve been asked to perform a selection of songs as well. I’m delighted to do so, but I am also completely freaking out considering that I have such a limited amount of time to prepare. The original plan was for me to only perform Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” with our jazz band at the dinner, and then one of my original songs and the theme song, Israel Kamakawiwo’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” at the prom, but I’ve now been requested to sing four or five more. These are some of the ones I’m considering, primarily because I’ve performed them all at previous events, and so I already know them by heart:
I’m Yours ~ Jason Mraz
Turn Me On ~ Norah Jones
Beloved One ~ Ben Harper
You ~ Bonnie Raitt
In Your Eyes ~ Sara Bareilles’s cover version
Answer ~ Sarah Mclachlan
I’m On Fire ~ Tori Amos's cover of the Bruce Springsteen song
With or Without You ~ U2
Sea of Love ~ Cat Power
Songbird ~ Fleetwood Mac
All would be performed acoustically, and / or with a keyboard. (I’m hoping to enlist my boyfriend to help me with a few of them.) Of the above songs, which four or five do you think would be best suited for a prom, and would compliment the other songs? Do you have any suggestions for songs that would also be fitting for prom? I play everything by ear, so the songs would preferably be fairly simplistic, or popular ones I’ve heard frequently enough that I could easily learn them in time. For some reason, I’m not able to post a link to one of my videos to give you a better idea about my voice, but if you would like to see one, email me & I’ll happily give it to you. I’d be very grateful for your help! I just realized that it’s after midnight, so technically prom is tonight, and I could really use the assistance.
Thanks in advance, and ((((hugs)))) to my contacts. : )
If there was a way I could reach through my screen and give you each a hug for your fantastic answers, and for just being awesome people and wonderful contacts, I so totally would. Thank you all. : )
Thanks again to everyone for their extremely thoughtful and helpful answers. I know many of you generously put a good deal of time and effort into your answers, and for that I am very appreciative. I wish there was a way I could award you all with Best Answer.
I ended up singing:
~ I'm Yours
~ Turn Me On
~ Chasing Cars (thank you, Mazzy, as always you are exceptionally awesome)
~ Collide (thanks to "To Thine Own Self Be True")
~ Eye on Love (my original)
~ Songbird (thanks Kirsty & Breathe Me)
Geo, I LOVE those songs you recommended. I was raised on Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan. I am singing "Forever Young" at graduation. Zoe, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is so beautiful. You all have impeccable taste. : )

Lark, I've got to admit I'm completely envious of you. You have got a killer voice, and I'm sure you'll blow them all away.
So, let me get this straight. You'll be first performing (assuming this is the correct order):
1) Feeling Good ~ Nina Simone
2) One of your original songs
3) Somewhere Over the Rainbow ~ Israel Kamakawiwo
In regards to Feeling Good: Nina Simone has got such great strong vocals and it'll definitely be interesting to see how you pull it off. Regretful how I won't be able to see you perform it! But it's a great song, and personally, it puts me into an awesome mood. It will sound brilliant with your jazz band.
Followed by an original song: I listened to all 4 of them, and you're planning to do Eye on Love. You've got raw talent. It's beautiful, and I actually think that if you wanted to, you could perform that one last, to conclude it with your own touch. What's not to love about it? : )
By the way, No Escape is also a great song.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow: I actually love this song; I have since I was little when I first got introduced to it by one of my closest, dearest friends who passed away of cancer. So it's incredibly meaningful to me. It's peaceful, pacifying, reflective...perfect. On a second note, you should probably perform this one last.
---
All those 3 songs have a soft, tranquil, and moving message about them. In that case, in order to compliment them, I wouldn't choose something particularly different or very fast-moving.
---
From your list, I'll choose my favorite ones:
I'm Yours ~ Jason Mraz: This is actually a good pick, because while these 3 songs are deep and stirring (in particular Somewhere Over the Rainbow & Feeling Good), I like how it compliments Eye on Love. They are both lighthearted and awesome for prom.
Turn Me On ~ Norah Jones: This is also superb because...well, Norah Jones has got an incredibly impressive and beautiful voice. In addition to Turn Me On, I also really like Come Away With Me. You could opt for either one, as they are both great.
Answer ~ Sarah Mclachlan: This song is just...exceptionally good. I know that I've said that about every song above but...I really like this one. She's got a brilliant voice.
Sea Of Love ~ Cat Power: I love the jazzy feel of this song. This would also be a great choice.
Songbird ~ Fleetwood Mac: You probably have noticed that I'm a huge fan of Eva Cassidy, so naturally, I like this adopted version of Songbird. This is my all-time favorite song. I truly, really, and entirely recommend it.
---
Other recommendations:
- Come Away With Me ~ Norah Jones
- Songbird ~ Eva Cassidy
- Fields of Gold ~ Eva Cassidy
- re: stacks ~ Bon Iver
- I Wanna Hold Your Hand ~ The Beatles
- Blackbird ~ The Beatles
- Yesterday ~ The Beatles
- Both Sides Now ~ Joni Mitchell
---
Holy smokes, I've written a lot. To summarize it up, I choose my final recommendations in addition to a) Feeling Good b) Eye on Love c) Somewhere Over the Rainbow:
- I'm Yours
- Songbird (by either Fleetwood Mac or Eva Cassidy, whichever version)
- I Wanna Hold Your Hand (maybe slightly slower than the original version)
- Fields Of Gold
- Both Sides Now
Done!
Sorry for such a long answer. I wish you the best, and I KNOW you will do fantastic.
Tell me about it afterwards!
((Hugs)) & Break a leg!

J-Live Epilogue What does it take to be a great MC? If you ask me, it's much more than Master of Ceremonies Because a lot of Masquerading Cornballs Don't realize it also means Mad Creativity In this day and age of mediocrity There's two types of rappers that you'll recognize and hear But I prefer the ones with the lyrics of the year Than the gimmick with the gear and the right puppeteer Now you can be the next Rakim Shakespeare you're still 10 steps away from having a career You step up the plate to earn respect from your peers And end up on deck for the remainder of your years I suppose this means greatness takes blood, sweat, and tears It also takes an industry that doesn't breed fear Or pumping all this mindless crap up in your ears And eliminating the contrast of what you get to hear You got to recognize it's a determined idea A righteous young mind is a devil's worst fear But when you wanna give the people peace and satisfaction Everybody's mama wants a piece of the action

I think that your voice would go amazing with Patsy Cline's "Crazy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJd2IePwCHI
It has the weird soul/folk drawls that I've heard you do with your voice and the beat is pretty simple and repetitive.
Other songs of thought
Nickelback --Photograph
It ends tonight--All American rejects
James Blunt- Beautiful
Until the end of time -- Justin Timberlake
Neyo- Closer
You might want to sing songs that are in the top 40 even though most of them are not all that great. Prom is one of those things that is supposed to be a composite of the entire h.s life.....so sing songs that were huge in the second half of the 2000s...the Taylor Swifts, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, e.t.c.
Most of you will look back at your prom and remember the opening/closing song of prom. Those two songs should be songs that had a lot of coverage in the past year because your prom memories are going to be of the 2000s decade. They played a bunch of 80s-90s songs on my prom..which was okay but they played songs that were played at our parents proms..which was weird. Your prom should def be a generational memory..so pick songs that are hot.

One song I've always found to be great to sing in public is You've got a friend - Carole King. It's simple enough to be relatively easy, everybody knows it and for your circumstances, it would be quite fitting for a senior prom. I sang that at an audition and it's a good one to go with. Yellow - Coldplay would also work well. It depends on the kind of atmosphere you want to create and what type of songs would suit your voice best. Since you've only got limited time to prepare, go with songs you know very well and you know you won't be nervous singing. Also, remember, it's a prom....people want to have fun! Don't sing all slow or sad songs. Sing songs people can dance to. Red umbrella by Faith Hill is also a good upbeat song that lots of people know.
Of the ones you've chosen, I'd certainly say Beloved One - Ben Harper would be great to sing, along with I'm Yours - Jason Mraz (who doesn't know and love that song?). Maybe ask some of your friends if they've got any recommendations or anything they'd like to hear at prom.
Good luck, have fun and congrats on graduating!

Judging by the occasion I'd say these songs would be the best to sing. Although I'm not sure how they would suit your voice. It really would depend. (But I don't want to sound like a creep for emailing asking for a video!)
I’m Yours ~ Jason Mraz
With or Without You ~ U2
Answer ~ Sarah Mclachlan
Sea of Love ~ Cat Power
Do you have any "happier" songs so to speak for the last song. A song that would cheer people up as they are all a bit depressing, but nice!
:D

Hey Skylark. I really hope I'm not too late!
I would say, for a prom, perform some of these:
I'm Yours
With or Without You
Songbird
I'm sorry that I'm having a bit of a mental block at the moment, but these may also be good. Most music I listen to is not acoustic, and these may need adjustment for your voice (Which is beautiful :)
Your Call- Secondhand Serenade

Collide- Howie Day

I like I’m Yours ~ Jason Mraz
In Your Eyes ~ Sara Bareilles’s cover version
With or Without You ~ U2 (But this might be abit depressing!)
I would suggest some happy/up-beat songs.....
Maybe 'High School Never Ends' by Bowling For Soup- funny and appropriate!
'Hey Jude' by the Beatles will also be appropriate!
'I'll Be There For You'- The Friends theme tune!
Have fun!

Oh wow! Tonight! I'm excited for you! I really, REALLY, REALLYYY want to go. I love that "Feeling Good" song by the way! I would love to hear you sing that.
I think Jason Mraz's 'I'm Yours' would definately be one to perform because it is really popular and everyone knows it. I would HAVE to request, Songbird by Fleetwood Mac. ;) U2 - With or without you is also another one of my favourites...I actually like all of the songs you've put on there. :/ It makes it difficult to choose.
Wow, Lark! You've got some amazing answers here! *Points up*
:) HAVE FUN AT PROM! GOODLUCK!

Anything by Daphne Loves Derby, Carolina Liar or The Calling.
They are really slow, sentimental songs that are my favorites to me.
Another really good song is The Man Who Can't Be Moved by The Script.

Hiya Sky...ok - we don't have proms over here, so I am only going by what I have seen on movies!! LOL
Firstly I think your song selections already are WONDERFUL, and i'm not sure if I will be able to add anything that will better those, but I will see what i can come up with.
Out of your choices, I think the best ones would be ..
I'm Yours
Turn Me on
In Your eyes
sea of love ( I have heard you sing, and actually think your voice would be PERFECT, if not better with this song!! )
Ok - I'm going to make a few suggestions of songs that could be acoustic and hopefully maybe suitable for what you are looking for. I'll attach some links too, even though i am sure you have heard of them all before.
