What do I need to be able to use my Mum's car on my UK driving test?

I was considering taking my driving test in my Mum's car instead of instructor's car as I'm running out of money and it would cost £50 to used my instructor's car on the day.

I was wondering what special requirements are needed to let me use the car legally on the day.

Its a perfectly working regular car, it has fully comprehensive insurance, up to date road tax/MOT and is in perfect working order.

Do I need to put one of those examiner mirror's in it? Do I need to put myself under her insurance?

Thanks

It will cost you more to get insurance on your mums car.

You must insure yourself on your Mum's car for the day and inform them of your intentions to take your test in it. At the beginning of your test they will make you sign a declaration to say the car is insured.

You must have a dual control mirror for the examiners use and the head restraint must be fitted. The Mirror can be bought from Halfords for around £6.99

You need someone to go with you to the test centre as it's not legal for you to drive without the supervision of someone over the age of 21 with a full english license for three years or more.

Your car must be fitted with L-plates front and back and be in good general condition.

If you get all of this then you can take your test in your Mum's car but usually it costs more than paying an instructor.

Examiners definately pefer you to take the driving test in a car with dual controls for safety resons. However, providing your own car is road worthy and legal, and also insured to take the test in you can use it for test. Obviously your accompanying driver should come to the test centre with you so that you can drive there and will have to wait until you return.....or they can sit in the back of the car on the actual test if YOU (the candidate) ask the examiners permission before test, but they must sit directly behind you and not interfere with the test in any way. Road worthy means: taxed & insured, MOT, everything working ie lights, horn, legal tyre treads & pressures, handbrake, etc., also you must provide a second interior mirror for the examiner to use. If all this seems a lot of hassle, get a recommended driving instructor to assess you and if you are really ready for test should only need very few lessons and can then hire his/her dual controlled car for test!!!
