Golf comp. with beginners to 12 handicap. What rules to make fun for all?

About a dozen from my church will meet at golf on the next public holiday. What rules can I include to make it fun for hackers and good golfers too?

- Closest to the Pin

- Longest drive

- Most air swings

- Most lost balls

- Gimmes

... these or other ideas?

    - Closest to the pin on all par 3's

    - Longest drive for 0-12 handicappers on one hole

    - Longest drive for 13+ handicappers on another hole

    - Prize for most lost balls

    - 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes stableford 3/4 or full handicap

    - Random cards drawn out at the end for some extra prizes (Just go around the room and ask someone to randomally pick a scorecard, whose ever it is....they get a prize.

    - Raffle

    - No gimmes (keeps it fair)

    - Maybe a foot of string for each shot on their handicap. Then they can use that length of string to move your ball. Then you cut it off once used. e.g 14 handicapper has 14ft of string (and scissors) He hits his ball 2ft from the pin on a par 3, he can cut 2ft off and put the ball into the hole for a birdie.

I haven't done this game before but it sounds quite fun. Using the string wisely.

You need to decide on a format to play. Having everyone play their own ball will take FOREVER and be really frustrating for all. A good way to move things along is to have everyone in each foursome hit off the tee, then pick the best and everyone plays from there - except for the person who hit the shot. Continue this way until the ball is in the hole. Keeps everyone involved, but cuts down on the time because only 3 are hitting most shots.

As the organizer, you need to put some thought into who goes in which group so that it is balanced and fair.

Pair people up. On each hole both hit tee shots, then both hit your partners second shot select from then on one ball and play alternate shots. This format really evens out players of all different handicapps and also leaves you with some tough choices about who's ball to select depending on where the pairings skills lie. Add the pairing handicapp together then half it or 6/8ths it.

    wizeblok, I haven't a clue about golf.

I just went two weeks ago to play putt putt or miniature golf. That was my first time picking up a golf club. I had fun! It was 18 holes and I aced one hole the first time putting at the 8th hole.

Good luck with your game and have fun more than being so serious.
