help with birds nest?
i mow a yard for a company and the field where i am mowing has a new resident. a bird has made a nest right in the middle of the area.kind of odd it is out in the open with no protection. i was always told not to mess with a birds young or eggs because the mom will not come back to them because of the scent. if the nest stays it will be a miracle if the chicks survive. if something does not run over them then one of the stray cats will eat them. can i move them safely and is there anyway to get the mom to follow for sure. the eggs are more or less just laying on the ground with some pebbles racked up beside them. 4 eggs

Leave the nest there..many birds nest on the ground and many lay their eggs ON the ground..this is normal. Many times the eggs blend in well and are not easily seen by predators and the parents will often fake a broken wing if a predator approaches and will lead them away from the nest and then fly off. There is a good chance the nest will survive just fine. Obvioulsy you should avoid mowing that area completely until the babies are gone. It is actually illegal to disturb the nests of wild naitve birds...they are protected by law..let it run it's course.

Some birds naturally lay their eggs on the ground. That old myth that if you touch the eggs the parents won't come back is not true. Birds have worse scent than we do and we certainly can't smell if someone has been touching things. Do not move them because the parent will come back and not see the eggs and think something has eaten them and won't look for it. Just keep it there.
