You have to take it before. Also check with your DMV that you have all the forms needed. Also make sure you sign up for Behind the wheel training before you go to the DMV to take your written test.

It is different from state to state. In Ohio if you are less than a month away from turning 18 you don't have to take drivers ed. But if you are under 18 you are required to have your learners permit and take drivers ed before you get a license.

You have to have your learner's permit before you can get behind the wheel. If you are taking a driver's ed course, do talk to your classroom instructor about when you will need it, so you can plan ahead. Some driver's ed courses have a couple of weeks in the classroom before you get to practice driving & others split classroom with driving.

It might vary by state, but you can't even drive until you have your permit. Therefore, you wouldn't really be able to complete driver's ed. Go to your state's DMV website and they should have some sort of study guide for whatever test you need to take to get your permit.
Good luck!

Depends on the rules in your location, which you didn't mention. Even those places that require it for those under the age of majority, 18, it usually can be taken anytime between the permit and getting tested for your license.

No, but the course would probably help ace your permit test.
