How do I get rid of a worm/virus called system security?

I am trying to fix my Mom's laptop computer. She has a virus/worm that I believe is called "System Security" and it essentially pops up on startup and tells you that it has scanned your computer and that you have viruses and that you need to upgrade (ie; pay) to get rid of them. This program will not let you open any other programs including the add/remove option and the task manager so I cannot remove it. Does anyone know anything about this or how to remove it?

    two things:

    1. Get rid of the toolbar that she installed for her browser. What this thing is a malicious program called a smitfraud.Smitfrauds can get into the PC through toolbars and a number of other ways.

    2. Or you can get a utility called SmitFraudFix from Major geeks at http://www.majorgeeks.com/ and run this program ONLY in safe mode.

3.Or go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ for other options. They deal a lot with this sort of thing.

ive heard of that, but ive never had the problem.to me it sounds like someone downloaded some bad porn, but thats not my business.you can try running ad-aware pro or spybot search and destroy.these are the 2 progs i use along side with nod32 antivirus and outpost firewall pro.if this doesnt get rid of it,then you can reinstall windows.this will for sure get rid of any infections.unless they got into the boot sectors of your drive(s).
