Is my dog a toy fox terrier or a rat terrier?
I purchased a puppy 7 months ago from a puppy store. All his paper work stated he was a toy fox terrier and i was even given his pedigree. My neighbor (who has worked with dogs for several years) is telling me that she is sure he is a rat terrier. She may be right after all the research i have been doing, but I am still not sure. The vet has'nt told me otherwise either. IF my neighbor is right, his pedigree documents must be bogus. Here are some pictures of my dog Riley, if anyone can tell by looking at him what his breed is, id greatly appreciate it :)
i completely undertand what you are saying about the puppy mills.. and i am against them as well... but it isnt the puppies fault either, and he needs love too. I just went to look (not purchase a dog) but when i saw his little face i just had to have him. Im not trying to get ridiculed, i just wanted a simple answer.
im getting so many different answers!! lol....
is there anything i can do.. maybe like report the puppy store.. for forging paper work..etc.. idk.. i feel like sh$t now.
uughh can you guys stop making me feel bad...lol.. i just reported the store i bought him from to the better business bureau.. i took out all his paper work and googled his "breeder"..Betty Mings.. who IS associated with puppy mills.. its called Thunder River kennels in MO... ill see what else i can do.. i screwed up, but im going to try to expose them anyway i can. thanks for all the answers.. seems like he is more of the rat terrier.. or who knows anymore lolol

RAT because I have one her name is Carder and she looks just like that only black and white
+++++++++++++ Hummmm maybe you can contact a local animal shelter or talk to a police officer and see if that would be considered breaking the law. I know if it was the ASPCA or SPCA they would do an investigation on it. But sorry I am not really sure about reporting it. I would though call them up and ask them as much information you can get about where your dog came from.
:/ Dont feel like sh$t. I feel better to educate now then too late. maybe in the long run you can warn others about this and not do it. All you can do now is give that puppy a good long life :D
To Angel: The reason people and I are saying she is supporting them is because by purchasing puppies from stores is only making the demand for more puppies to be made in puppy mills if you actually knew what went on during a puppy mill you would understand. So sorry but your the jerk :D
Here is a photo of mine to compare with yours (btw. yours is cute though)

The pictures were good enough to confirm - not a fox terrier.
Rat terriers have a "marked" or "pronounced" stop. This refers to the angle of the drop between the top of the head and the muzzle. A fox terrier has a wedge shaped head with almost no stop while rat terriers have an obvious stop as in your dog. The ears of a Fox terrier are folded forward making a "V" shape, Rat terriers have upright ears.
Papers from a pet store may help prove fraud, not worth a dime otherwise. Never buy from a store that does not know what it is selling when you know darn well it's a milled dog
Pet stores print "papers" for a dog as the dog is purchased. I investigated a local pet store and was shown the same puppy over the course of a month and the paperwork was dated to say it was still an 8 1/2 week old puppy. They tried hard to convince me another puppy was a 2 month old Golden Retriever when it was growing in it's adult hair coat (usually at about 4 month of age!)
While able to prove fraud, no proof of abuse could be had and the store is still in business.
I tell everyone not to spend any money in a store that sells milled puppies, do business elsewhere. Every dime keeps the entire mill industry going. Every puppy purchased makes room for another to be born in a chicken cage to a mother who will be "thrown away" once she can't have more pups. "Thrown away" is a euphamism for what they do to unprofitable dogs.
When the petstores can't sell a puppy it winds up with rescue groups that place is with good homes for a small fee. This is the only acceptable way to wind up with a "milled"/petstore puppy - Shame on you! Shame! Shame!

Since he is from a pet store and hence a puppy mill there is no way of knowing. The papers can be falsified. Also, puppy mill breeders do not breed to standard so it is the norm that even if 'pure' they do not look anything like what a breed is supposed to look like.
It would be impossible without a dna test and since the two breeds are closely related anyway, it may still not be definite.
A dogs pedigree and papers are only as good as the honesty of the breeders behind them. Puppy mills and pet stores are not known for their honesty regarding the their puppies.
You are a typical Puppy mill/pet store purchaser. You purchased him on a whim. Unfortunately, no matter how "innocent" your intentions were, the end result is that you put money in the puppy mill/pet store's pocket that only supports the abuse of your pup's parents.
ADD: You don't know for a fact that they forged the papers. If you sue you would need a DNA test proving that he is not a toy fox terrier. And then, all you would get is the cost of the puppy, The costs of a law suit is more than what you would recover. Just, love your dog for who he is, get him neutered, and learn from your mistakes. (Not everyone can be perfect like me. LOL) Next time, don't even go into a pet store that carries puppies, and when you are ready for a new dog, go to a rescue or shelter or purchase from a reputable breeder.

Since the pup was from a pet store (first mistake) more then likely its a mix or even if its a Fox Terrier its a very badly bred one. And you are probably right - the "papers' are fake.
The problem of the "cute little puppy in a pet shop" is that by buying the pup, you are only encouraging more puppy mill stock or backyard breeders producing more for the pet shop. I know its hard, but you really should not buy any animal from a pet shop no matter how cute he/she is.
I was in a pet shop and they had an Italian Greyhound in a cage. At least that is what the sign claimed. It was a CKC (puppy mill registry) and was the WORSE looking IG I've every seen! Even my husband questioned as to what the dog was...........I had to show him what a real IG was at home on the computer!

She looks like a toy fox, but she seems oversized.
Rat terriers are generally a bit short-legged compared to a toy fox.
Since you bought her from a shop, so she could be anything, maybe a mix of toy fox and rat; the two breeds are similar.
All the puppies being sold in pet shops are either from puppy mills or backyard breeders. Please don't buy puppies from shops!!! No respectable breeder will sell pups to a shop, and most national breed clubs don't allow their members to do so.

Rat terrier. Congratulations on supporting puppy mills, you're money just went to make the lives of those dogs more miserable. Any papers a pet store gives you is bogus.
By buying a dog from a pet store you are indeed supporting puppy mills. Best thing to do is not to buy from them. Its simple supply and demand. Don't demand the dogs the supply will diminish

That looks like a rat terrier. Although, having bought from a pet store instead of a reputable breeder, you can't be entirely sure he's not a mix. If you ever buy another dog, please consider buying from a breeder instead of supporting puppy mills.
If the pet store didn't even know the right breed, what does that say about them?

You bought from a puppy store.. he is from a puppy mill.. more than likely the paper work is bogus anyways. He may even be a mix of fox and rat terrier.
This site may help you to determine the difference between the breeds..
