You got some of the answers with the old wives tales but usually it's because he heard something that he either liked or disliked like a dog whistle or a high pitch sound. I had a dog that would howl or "sing" to certain music. One day he was sleeping the radio was on and Billy Ray Cirus came on and he started howling first in his sleep then continued when he woke up.

My dogs have always howled when they've heard sirens or loud whistles. My current dog sometimes semi-wakes up during the night, then gets disoriented and starts howling for her pack (she sleeps in the hallway); full, clear, haunting wolf-howls. Gave us a bit of a fright first time it happened and I made enough fuss over the dog to wake her up completely. Now I merely go sit in the hallway, so she knows I'm there. She then staggers over to me with half-opened eyes and flops down on my lap, fast asleep again within seconds. Luckily it doesn't happen too often, just once every few months.

Most likely your dog heard something or he was maybe dreaming.

i know my dogs howl when they hear the fire stations siren or other noises we humans cant hear. that could b the case.
