If you have an HD tv, is every program in HD?

To get HD can you just have an HD tv or an HD sky box or both?

If you have both is it better HD or the same as just one of them?

It may sound a bit confusing but thanks.

No, every programme or channel is not in HD.

Only a couple channels are actual HD, the rest still SD, but possibly upconverted to HD resolution by the receiver box.

Even on the HD channels, some SD programmes are still shown.

You need an HD set and receiver to watch HD.

The SD channels and programmes will be better.

  • You have to have both!

If you put HD on a non HD TV, there will be no difference in terms of TV quality.

Some of the HD Panasonic TVs have 'Freesat' built in them, which is like a high definition version of Freeview (pay once for TV, watch forever - unlike Sky). Getting one of the Panasonics mean that you don't need a receiver box. With Freesat & Sky, not all channels are in HD. I think there are 3 on Freesat that are HD (BBC HD etc) and a lot more on Sky. All the other channels are in standard definition (just like normal digital TV)

If you have a HD TV without a HD receiver built in, then you will need to get a box.

In my honest opinion, having a Freesat receiver in a TV is a bad idea because if you want to record to, you will need a Freesat recorder. These cost about £300, so basically you are paying for two receivers (one in the TV and one in the recorder). Sky HD on the other hand can come with a SkyHD+ box, which is basically a PVR for Sky TV.

Note: The full HD resolution is 1920 x 1080...any TV with a figure lower than that is not full HD. 'Full HD' = the best picture. Also, make sure that the leads that you use to connect a HD box to your TV are HD capable. E.g 'HDMI' or 'component.' HDMI is digital, therefore is better.

    Hope this helps :)

You need a HDTV and a HD Digital box (such as Freesat HD, Virgin Media V+ or Sky HD).

Most channels in the UK still broadcast in SD. What's worse is that most programming on HD channels is just upscaled SD.

Unless you are really into the latest technology or watching movies on a huge home cinema system, paying out large amounts of money to receive HD television services is probably a bit of a waste of money at present.

each significant cable and satellite tv for pc service has HD programming. you in many cases pay one extra value to get HD CHANNELS out of your cable provider. some channels are obtainable in HD, and another channels do no longer supply any hd provider. a great variety of the time you decide on an HD cable field besides to get hd programming on your television.

In order to watch programmes or films in HD, you must have an HD television AND an HD source e.g. cable, satellite, Freesat or a Blu-Ray player.

If you only have Freeview or a DVD player, you won't see anything in HD at all, even with an HD television.
