When it comes to wetsuits the ONLY thing to do is to go to a local surf shop to get it, especially if it is a first wetsuit. You need to buy a wetsuit that fits just right for you. That means you have to try on the wetsuits until you find one that is a skin tight fit and doesnt have any loose parts where a bunch of water can get in. If you do not buy one that fits right, when you go paddle out, you will get a wetsuit full of cold water and your body wont be able to make it warm since the water can come in and go out.
Wetsuits are non returnable products, which is another reason why you should always go to a surf shop and get the right wetsuit that fits the best. If a wetsuit doesnt fit you, you will not be able to get your money back. Wetsuits are also very expensive, so be careful when you buy yours.
Another reason to go to a local surfshop to buy it is because the guys there surf the breaks that you will be surfing and have the best advice on how thick your wetsuit should be. I surf on the east coast so I am going to be on the other side of the country from you. I can not give you proper advice on how thick the wetsuit should be, but the guys at thh surf shop can. They will also help you get the right size and tell you if it fits right.
I also prefer oneil wetsuits, but there are many other brands and that is only my favorite. You can try what ever kind you want. I hope this helps you out with your new wetsuit.

It depends when (as to what time of the year) you will be surfing. In summer, a springsuit or even bathing suit is fine. However, Fall and spring, you will definitely need a springsuit. By winter, either a 3-2 or 4-3 suit will be needed, depending on how much cold affects you. 3-4 and 4-3 refers to thickness of torso and arms/legs in mm --> the thicker, the warmer you are.
I'd go to a local surf shop and ask a lot of questions and be honest with yourself as to if you really think you'll be surfing in February etc... Also, if you have the cash, get the non-bottom-of-the line wetsuit. The more work they put into the seams and the better material they use, the more comfortable and warm you are out there.
Oh yeah, if you really don't like cold, buy some booties too - not feeling that initial rush of really cold water in winter is priceless.

hmmm... well since you arent able to stand the cold water i would say you should get a 4/3 suit. that just means that the torso is 4mm and the limbs on the suit are 3mm (they are smaller for flexibility) you can go thicker, but then your suit will just be a lot more heavier and from experience you feel like a rock with thicker wetsuits. but then again you feel warm haha.. soo it really is what you are looking for. i would recommend a 4/3 though :)
about size i would say look up the size chart of the wetsuit you are going to buy. hope this helps.

Xcel is my favorite brand. A 3/2 full suit will work just fine in winter, but if you are a super baby like me and don't mind it being a little harder to paddle I would go 4/3. You won't want a 4/3 in summer so I would try and find a cheap used springsuit on craigslist after you know your sizing.

you may purchase wetsuits interior the summertime because of the fact they are on sale alot, because of the fact no one actual makes use of them then, while in wintry climate, the genuinely value will finally bypass up, alot , because of the fact a great sort of people will choose it then. So get it in summer season, or you would be apologetic approximately it in wintry climate.

o'neil is my favorite brand when it comes to surfing gear and wetsuits
http://www.oneill.com/#/women/americacanada/collec...
heres a link.
find one you like on here then if you dont really like the style, go look at roxy.com or something for a better style selection, but o'neil will keep you warm the best in the water. When you get to SanDiego, just go into a surf shop, and usually whoever is working their will know what size and fit you need.
Good Luck and I hope I helped!

I surf in sd and I got my wet suit from hanger 94 (voted the number one skate/surf/snowboard shop in sd)
the workers there will help you pick one that's right for you
(I would talk to the guys about the wetsuit though cause they know their stuff when it comes to the important stuff while the girls just know which styles the cutest)
as in thickness, fit, size, brand, ect.
.........................................................................................................
My personal opinion for you is a thick wetsuit (cause you don't like cold water)
you also might consider getting a hoody, gloves, and booties to keep you extra warm during those extra cold days.

You can get a winter suit. But I use a spring suit. A spring suit will work great. Before you leave, go to a shop called T.K Froghouse. They can help you sooo much. They will hook you up with everything you need
