It is disrespectful to the free country we are so blessed to live in, the soldiers who have fought & died carrying that flag for freedom and the morals & values our country was built on. I don't think it's fostering social change at all other than showing other countries and other citizens how little we respect what we have & the opportunity to live in the greatest country in the world. How hard is it to stand up to show a little respect for all our flag stands for? Have Americans really gotten that lazy? And why is it a religious issue? Our forefathers who built this country with blood, sweat, tears and many lives wrote "one nation, under God". If you don't want to say God, just stand there quietly but at least be respectful of others. By the way, where do you think the right to do what you want to came from? Many other countries would arrest you for not standing for their anthem & flag. Your freedom of spech and choices is a priveledge of living in America.

You are not required to stand during the pledge of allegiance. It is an oath to the country that you reside. All countries have their pledges of oath and loyalty to their country.
It is America, though, that is probably the ONLY country in the world that will allow people who find it necessary to make such a statement of opposition to the country in which they live...
Everybody who lives in the US should sacrifice one way or another or show some type of respect for the freedoms that we have. Standing up for 30 seconds is quite minor in the grand scheme of things, when US soldiers are coming home with mangled limbs or dead...
If you decided to disrespect your flag, oath, or song in another country, you might be prosecuted, jailed, or injured...
There is a difference between standing up (or sitting down) for what you believe in, and being selfish and attention-seeking. STAND UP FOR 30 seconds, for crying out loud... or go fight in a war.

The Pledge of Allegiance is a statement of patriotic loyalty - it is also a religious oath because it contains the phrase 'under God.' There are, therefore, debates over whether forced recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance violates the separation of church and state...
so when you stand.. it is also showing respect and honor for your country..... to me, showing respect for the USA out weighs any few words (you may or may not agree with) in the pladge......

Well, you have the right to NOT stand during the Pledge of Allegiance if you don't believe in God. But, if they still make you stand and say it or whatever, then THEY are very, very wrong. Not you.
I know a classmate who is Jo-ho-vah Witness...??? That means she doesn't have to stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance. That also means she doesn't celebrate Christmas or any other holiday. She's a non-believer in God.
