do i have to do anything special when i put in a mic?

i plugged in my mic but i can not be heard it is open and on

    also you may need to select the mic and turn it on.dont remember i think it was under recording properties or something.on xp for my folks.ran mic check and it was functioniung just didnt work.

    open your volume settings and/or control panel should be a mic option
