what can cause an engine to make a coughing noise for 2-5 seconds after it's turned off?

when i turn my car off it makes a coughing noise aferwards for like 2-5 seconds... but it turns back on... also when i first turn it on it cuts off but starts back up... please help...

    It sounds like it has whats called run-on. Its caused by two things, cheap fuel, there is a difference between gas stations. Or its maintenence related. Get a tune-up and get some good gas from a good station ie. Shell, or Mobil. this should help.

    what sortof car is it? sounds as if your distributor needs adjusted
