1) Cool, since 71 games in, you'd expect a variance of 4 games away from .500 at this stage of the season statistically.
2) Run differential of every team:
East:
Red Sox: +51
Yankees: +25
Blue Jays: +33
Rays: +50 (They'll make a run)
Orioles: -61
West:
Rangers: +16
Angels: -11
Mariners: -22
A's: -23
So the best team in the West is still probably #5 in the AL East. But nah, let's make a sweeping statement based on a small sample size that shows no statistical significance even without considering the possibility for sample bias.

The AL East is the best division in baseball! But this year the AL West is just mediocre. Odds are the Angels will the West with 83 wins, 83! the East however has the Yankees and Red Sox winning about 96 games each with the Rays winning 85 and the Blue Jays winning 82. But next year, watch out. The Angels will get healthy and use that farm system to get talent, the Rangers will get their best pitching prospects up now and watch them get better, the A's know how to find cheap and good talent, and the Mariners have smart managment and are going to be sellers next month. Watch out 2010.

It's still early in the season so the East vs West won/loss record for the season will surely change, and probably shift in favor of the East.
If you take out the Orioles 5-12 record against the West, the tally would currently be, 28-26 in favor of the East. The Red Sox are in first in the East but are only 5-10 against the West. Go figure.
While the Rangers are doing unexpectedly well so far, I think the Angels will eventually capture the division title. But whoever wins, they'll be big underdogs against the East team or teams should they meet in the playoffs.
In my opinion, the top 4 teams in the East are better than either the Rangers or the Angels.

Let's face it, the Yankees and Red Sox are not the overwhelming powers they have been in years past. Combine that with the fact that the Rays' pitching has been far worse than last year (see Scott Kazmir), and the fact that Roy Halladay can only pitch once every 5 days, and I am not so sure the east is that much better. The Angels have underachieved themselves and the Rangers have the offensive capability to compete with anyone. I think the Angels and Rangers both have a legitimate chance to win the AL.

The AL East aren't exactly monsters. It just seemed so because 4 of the teams are just really evenly matched. In interleague play, the AL isn't that great.
