What do you think of this? I was recently told that I have no right calling the "American Indians"?
"Native Americans" when they have chosen by consus that they be called, "American Indian". She even started yelling at me and told me that this proves that I have no respect for them and they hate that term and that they have to deal with this on a daily basis.
Not only is this term innacurate, because it is gerneral knowledge that this is a misnomer that has never been corrected ,starting with Christopher Columbus, who thought he had landed in the West Indies. She even agreed with this when I told her why I use the term "Native American" seeing as it is more accurate than "Americn Indian". She said that while it is true that he thought he was in the west Indies and also that Indians from India are to be called Indians, but these people are "American Indians", if I actually do respect the "American Indians", I will call them by what they choose to be called.
Ahhh.... I see. Then if she is correct in this nonsense, then I, since I was named Shelly Bradley at birth and until this age at 34, all my life have been called Shelly Bradley, I say now, that this whole time, everyone has been calling me the wrong name. My true name Shakeila the white rose and my people that I have descended from all over the world are to be called Boobshebobeds. That is our true name and noone wants to accept it. We will answer to no other. Hmmff!!
Kanien, yours is too cute. I could not stop laughing with your humor. I stand highly amused and educated. I belied that the natives to this continent were from northeast Russia because that is what I was taught. But looking at it your way, it does make perfect sense that they could have simply already been here forming from some other way. It is completely true that just because they told us this, does not mean they are right.
Most of what we were taught in true is either completely false or only half true. And this is just one of the things I happened to not question. 34 and still learning. ;)
Also, in answer to Kanien and to all, it is NOT true that everyone born in the United States in native to this continent. Look up the word native in the dictionary.
I, myself, am happy to call myself British and Polish descent. Only a very small part "native American" if that is what is proper. But I really want to know what chief Seattle and other natives who were alive 200 years ago would have called the natives here. It seems to me, that most United States citizens have been duped by our gov't and it seems to me that the term "American Indian" is simply a tool to further remove us, in our minds, from our true identity.

and who is this spokesperson for all native people? and i've been native my entire life...did i miss the vote on what we are to be called?? concensus huh. nope...that email must have gone into my spam folder.
the government calls us american indians or jsut indians. other people call us native americans, usually followed by some lame rant by a thin skinned about how "everyone born here is a native american" and that is usually followed by someone else with a 5th grade education stating how "even so called native americans are immigrants from asia (or siberia)". of course the fact that dna has proven we didn't come from asia or siberia. doesn't enter into their minds. that email must have gone into THEIR spam folder.
and the ONLY people i have seen get all bent out of shape about what we indigenous people should be called...are themselves not indigenous! i've sat there and watched groups of white people almost come to blows over whether we should be called indians or native americans or american indians...its insane!
personally i prefer to be called love goddess but so far it hasn't stuck.
ok on a serious note. we have nations and they are older than america by thousands of years. so call us what we are..mohawk, pima, miwok, apache, lakota, anishnaibae. i'm fine with the english version of my nation, mohawk, since i've yet to meet someone outside our nation who can pronounce kanien:kaha'ka well. if you don't know simply ask "what NATION are you from?" we are happy to answer. if you need to speak about us in general indigenous works or natives or in canada first nations.
but trust me...we know when we are being insutled. its not so much what is said by how it is said. i've been called a red indian in london but i was not insulted. the person was not trying to insult me and that was obvious. but someone else could call me indian and be looking for a bruising! its all in the intent.

To be honest I wouldn't know what else to call them. I lived in Canada for 10 yrs and there the native people were Inuit Indians....I think!
I personally am Welsh. We are called Celts.
Neither is accurate.
The word Welsh means foreigner and was given to us by the invading Anglo Saxons 1500 years ago.
We are called Cymru (pronounced Cumrie).
As far as being Celtic, it is thought we descended from the Ancient Britain's that predated the arrival of the Celts. The language is quite different to Irish or Scottish Celt, yet there are people native to Turkey who speak a similar language to my people.
I was born in Loughor which is also spelt Llwchwr in Cymru.
So, the native peoples of America are one of many people whose true identities have been over ridden by invaders to their land.

Your professor is so fed on in being PC, that he is afraid to listen to the phrase black. I choose to name African Americans black. At a few factor in time, many black folks proposal that black sounded dangerous in order that they began calling themselves 'Afro-Americans.' Then they modified the identify to African-Americans. I am establishing to suppose that the label 'black' manner something that black folks do this so much white folks do not do. We relatively don't have separate black song stations and tv stations as this reinforces the well-known segragation of our society.

If they look at their history, they come from Siberia! They should be called Siberian Americans.
